1. By your rights in my conscience, monitor intoxication
And do not hurt me with blame and reproach
١. بِحَقِّكُم في مهجَتِي رَاقِبوا الرَّبَّا
ولاَ تُوجِعُونِي بالمَلامِ وبالعُتبَى
2. For the dwellers of the dunes, their weeping does not console
And their tragedies refuse to help them overflowing
٢. فما سَاكناتُ الدَّوحِ يُشجِى نَحِيبُها
وتأبَى مآقِيها تُسَاعِدُها سَكبَا
3. Nor do the memories of passion comfort his heart
To annihilate him from afar and bring him near
٣. ولا ذِكرَياتُ الصَّبِّ يلتَاعُ قلبُه
فَتعدِمُه بُعدا وتُوجِدُهُ قُربا
4. Neither a bereaved mother weeping for her only child
With eyes tearful since he left with sadness
٤. ولا ثَاكِلٌ مَفجُوعةٌ بوحيدها
تقَرَّحَ منهَا الجفنُ من بعده نَحبا
5. Nor a nation stripped of its rights
Appealing to one who fights for it but did not fight
٥. ولا أمَّةٌ مسلُوبة مِن حُقُوقها
تُنَاشِد مَن عَنها يَذِبُّ وما ذَبَّا
6. More troubled inwardly, hurt at heart
Than I among those mentioned, pained within
٦. بأتعَبَ مني باطِنا متألِّما
وأوجَعَ مني بين من ذُكِروا قَلبا
7. For my conscience does not cease to reveal
A war which when I enter its intensity flares up
٧. فإنَّ ضَميري ليسَ يَبرَحُ شَاهِرا
لِحَربٍ إذا ما شِبتُ من هَولها شَبَّا
8. And I unleash from the army of the wine a troop
Upon it and in it which plunders me plundering
٨. وسَلَّطتُ من جيشِ المدامةِ جحفلاً
عَليه وفيه راحٌ ينهبني نَهبا
9. It makes me weep when I attack a brother
And why does my chest when raided by spurs get blamed
٩. يُبَكِّتُنِي مالي هجَمتُ على أخ
ولم ذاتُ صدرِي إذ غزتنِي الطِّلاَ تُسبَى
10. I changed from a spirit whose gentleness
Spreads the fragrance of jasmine when it blows
١٠. أغيَّرتُ من رُوحٍ يُفاوِحُ لطفُها
أريجَ نسيمِ اليَاسمِين إذا هَبَّا
11. And I confessed a secret I had long concealed
But now my heart overflowed with love for it
١١. وبُحتُ بِسِرٍّ طالما قد كَتمتُهُ
ولكنَّ قلبي الآن فاض به حُبا
12. So I expressed it under the influence of a power
That after ruling speech refused to leave the heart
١٢. فأعرَبتُ عنه تحت تأثيرِ قوَّةٍ
أبت بعدَ ملكِ النُّطقِ أن تتركَ القلبَا
13. So I said wait my conscience for I
Have excuses that if you know you'll quit blaming
١٣. فقلتُ لَهُ مهلاً ضَمِيري فإنَّ لي
مِنَ العُذرِ ما إن تدرِه تَترُكِ العُتبَى
14. Yes I have sinned a sin as you see
But my sin is not my sin, it is the sin of intoxication
١٤. نعَم إنني أذنبتُ ذَنبا كمَا تَرى
وما الذَّنبُ ذنبِي إنما الذَّنبُ للصَّهبَا
15. It replied, you have strayed from the right path
Is man anything but his deeds, o most ignorant
١٥. فقالَ مُجِيبا قد ضَللتَ عن الهُدَى
هلِ المرءُ إلا فعلُه أيها الأغبَى
16. If the drinking of the cup leads to a downfall
Curse the drinking of the cup, curse it, curse it
١٦. إذا كان رَشفُ الكأسِ يُفضِي لسَقطةٍ
فتبًّا لرَشفِ الكاس تبَّا لهُ تبا
17. I said I will go seeking
Forgiveness for me, what do you say if it relents
١٧. فقلتُ له إنِّي سأذهبُ طالِبا
لِعفوِه عنِّي ما تقولُ إذا لَبَّى
18. It said, if you come to it humbled
And ask forgiveness, I will forgive the sin
١٨. فقالَ إذا ما جئتَهُ متذَلِّلاً
وأولاكَ عفوا إننِي أغفِرُ الذَّنبا
19. My Lord, be gentle with me and save my recklessness
For my conscience cannot bear war
١٩. أمولاي رِفقا بي وأنقِذ حُشَاشَتِي
فإنَّ ضَميري لا أطِيقُ له حَربا
20. The whims of the self have deviated toward You my Master
So do not blame the madness for the whims of the self
٢٠. جَنت نَزواتُ النفسِ نحوَك سيِّي
فَعن نَزواتِ النَّفس لا تَلُمِ الصَّبَّا
21. How great is the good news if You have mercy on me
And if You do not have mercy, how terrible is misery
٢١. فما أعظَمَ البُشرَى إذا ما رحِمتَنِي
وإن أنتَ لم ترحَم فما أسوَأَ العُبَى
