1. Leave me be, for I cannot bear to speak,
And my heart only grows more pained.

2. I enjoyed the fair views of a lovely place,
Yet the Lord did not allow me to fully delight.

3. For she I loved has gone and lit my passion aflame,
And thoughts of her only stoke the burning embers.

4. She left me a unique, lonely lover,
And I was content to be singular and lonesome.

5. What can I do when my heart is not inclined
To show patience now that she is gone and sworn off?

6. For any place where you see no resemblance
Becomes Hell though it be Paradise.

7. You see only gloomy faces,
And never a face smiling.

8. People whose very life is stinginess,
And the best of them aspires but to generosity.

9. Life in Taznit is only scenic views
Where you see happiness camped in its valleys,

10. The charm of its beauty captivates one's heart,
And it makes even the mute speak from sheer delight.

11. Outwardly it is bliss and mercy,
Yet inwardly the torment is exaggerated.

12. They greet you courteously if you pass mannerly,
Yet few greet if they are the ones passing by.

13. I spent an age there with bittersweet days
Of company and loneliness, joy and sorrow.

14. I lamented the character of some of its people,
Yet my lament did nothing to temper their nature.

15. The state of affairs there said to me:
"Good morning, stranger, and enjoy yourself!"

16. I spent years among my neighbors
Yet found none who aspired to manners.

17. I found only vulgarity and sons of vulgarity,
You see every kind of boorishness embodied in them.

18. Thus you find me, from time to time,
Blowing you a kiss at dawn, with a smile.

19. Be they from the wine-skins or the aged wine itself,
Her lips are buzzing, drunk.

20. The branches droop languidly on her dress,
And the garden has bloomed, cheek and smile.

21. So she delighted him with a glance that smote their faces.
For one like you is truly entitled to delight.

22. I beseech the Lord of the Throne, and I ask Him with me
To cleanse me of them, perhaps a shirt.
