اليوم عاد رجائي مورق العود
Today my hope has returned, thriving like a sapling
يا سائلي عنه لما جئت أمدحه
O you who ask about him when I come to praise him
ذهب التكرم والوفاء من الورى
Gone is nobility and loyalty from the land
نثار مثلي إذا ما جاء يهديه
My gift, when it comes to give,
بعد الصباح الذي ودعتكم فيه
After the morning when I bade you farewell
خطبن وأيمان الكماة المنابر
The pulpits' speeches and oaths of the veiled women,
يرمي فؤادي وهو في سوادئه
My heart casts itself into peril
صوت حمام الأيك عند الصباح
The voice of the dove at dawn
هبني أقصر بالخطا
Grant me leave, I shorten in writing,
ومنازعي في أول اسمك
My opponents dispute your name,
وجدي بلومك يا عذول يزيد
My heart blames you, O belovèd, so hasten
أأحبابنا قد شقتمونا فأسعدوا
Our beloveds have caused us so much anguish, so make us happy
وعدت باستراقة للقاء
She promised stolen moments to meet
ألم صبحا وجمر الحلي قد بردا
The morning dawned in pain, and the embers of my campfire had cooled,
إلى خيال خيال في الظلام سرى
To an imagination an imagination in the darkness set forth
سواء تدان منهم وتناء
Whether near or far, their association is equally disdained,
أنصر أخاك مسعدا في ما حزب
Aid your brother when misfortunes befall
أسائل عنها الركب وهي مع الركب
I ask the caravan about her while she is with the caravan
عوجوا عليها أيها الركب
Turn towards her, O caravan
لله درابن خالد فلقد
To the glory of Khalid's generous son!
سأنشر أوصاف المهدب مادحا
I will spread the praise of the refined one, praising him
بأبي العذار المستدير بخده
By my slender cheek I swear, effortlessly fair
ما زلت أسمع أن الشهب ثاقبة
I still hear that meteors pierce
من كان يخدم بالخطا كبراءه
Whoever serves the great ones with mistakes
بحياة أير أبي الرجا
The wind played gently with his cloak
وإني على حال كما تشتهونه
Although I'm in a state as you wish
قفا معي في هذه المعاهد
Stand with me in this covenant
أرقت وصحبي بنجد هجود
I and my companions passed the night awake in Najd
دام علاء العماد
The pillar of faith, Ala, remains,
أراقب من طيف البخيلة موعدا
I watch for the arrival of my beloved from the abode of the miserly one
ما زال سهم اللحظ يجرحه
The arrow of the glance still wounds him
كلما اشتقت يا خليلي نجدا
Whenever I long for you, my friend, for Nejd
عهد تغير من سعاد ومعهد
A pact that changed from joy and covenant
رأيت الطريق إلى الوصل وعرا
I have translated the poem from Arabic to English while preserving the poetic output:
نشدتك الله هل تدرين يا دار
I implore you by God, do you know, O house
كتاب عبد إلى مولاه يعتذر
A servant's letter to his Master expressing remorse
قلت للحاسد نما
I said to the envious one, "Look
سلا رسوما أقامت بعد ما ساروا
She erected provisions after they had marched on
لما شكا قلبي هوى نوار
When my heart complained of love's anguish
أهكذا يسري القمر
Does the moon thus move,
أحضر الليل منك عقدا وثغرا
The night brought from you a necklace and lips
قد تولى أبو الرجا
Abu al-Raja had undertaken
وقع رعاك الله من ملك
May God protect you from any king
أسأت فأصبحت مستوحشا
Roamed astray, so became lonesome
ألا ليت شعري هل أبيتن ليلة
A Moment in Time
بالكتب طرا كتاب خطه ملك
With books as wings a king inscribed this book
قضى على جد شانيكم بإتعاس
You have triumphed over the enemy who sought to demean you,
أيا ولي الدولة المرتجى
O guardian of the hoped-for state
لما تراءت راية الربيع
When the banner of spring appeared
ألا طرقتنا والثريا كقرطها
Oh how she knocked on our door, like the tinkling of her anklet
سرى ولثام الصبح قد كاد ينحط
The dawn has slipped away, drawing off its veil,
يا من رأى ظعن الحي الذي شحطا
O you who saw the scars of the alive one who was tortured
قل لعماد الدين عن عبده
Tell Imād ad-Dīn about his servant
أوجست من جمر بخدك ساطع
I feared the glowing embers on your cheek would burn
أثرها فقد طال الغداة وقوعها
The trace of her is gone though her fall took long in coming,
بما عن من شكوى زمان تعرضا
With my complaints of an era I faced,
وصال الشمس يهدي الاحتراقا
The sun's union causes combustion
رمين القلوب بأشواقها
The hearts cast their passions
حلفت بالساعين يوم الموقف
I swore by the swift seekers on the Day of Assembly,
للطيف بحر بكاي ينفرق
The gentle one has a sea of tears that flows
وبرق مشيب في ظلام ذوائب
The lightning of hoariness in the darkness of vicissitudes
يا مودع السر درا عند أجفاني
O confider of secrets, scattering pearls at my eyelids,
قليل لهم أن يحن المشوق
The ardent lover finds little respite
تدري بالله ما يقول الشمع
Do you know what the candle says
زد علوا في كل يوم ورفعه
Keep ascending each day and rising
أمل على القلب الغرام فأبلغا
He made love descend upon my heart, so they reached
ورد الخدود ودونه شوك القنا
The blush of cheeks and under it the thorns of spears,
إذا لم تقدرا أن تسعداني
If you two cannot make me happy,
هو الغرام أقام الحي أم ظعنوا
Is it love that settled the living, or did they complain
شفته تحيات العيون العلائل
Her bright glances greeted me
سترن المحاسن إلا العيونا
The eyes betray all beauty save their own,
جمال ولكن أين منك جميل
Beauty, but where is your beauty from you, little beauty?
إلى من يشار بهذا العذل
To whom is this love poetry addressed,
اليوم يومي ويوم الأينق الذلل
Today is my day, and the day of the graceful gazelles
خيال زائر مني خيالا
A phantom of mine paid a visit in the form of a phantom
أهلا بوجهك من صباح مقبل
Welcome, your face brings a new dawn
وجد الصبا للعاشقين رسولا
The morning breeze found a messenger for the lovers,
وسألت عن حالي إذا فارقته
I asked how I would fare when we parted
ليس التعجب إلا من بني زمن
Wonder comes only from the sons of bygone days
زف المنام إلي طيف خياله
Slumber carried to me the ghost of his phantom
لأي وميض بارقة أشيم
For what flash of lightning should I roam
أنا والرجاء وأنت والكرم
I and hope, you and generosity
وأحسد زندروذ غداة سرنا
I envy Zandruz the morning we traveled
لما افتحت كتابي منشئا بيدي
When I opened my book, starting with my hand
تصرف أحوالي على حكم أيامي
My state is subject to the rule of my days
رمتني بلحظ واتقتني بمعصم
She glanced at me and drew away
من رأي قبل ثناياك مداما
Who saw before your dimples a cupbearer
ألحظ في جفونك أم صوارم
Are those glances in your eyes swords,
أهواكم وخيالكم يهواني
I yearn for you and your memory haunts me
دع العين مني تسكب الدمع أو تفنى
Let my eyes cease shedding tears or perishing,
سبى مني الفؤاد لحاظ فاتن
My heart was captivated by the gaze of a beauty,
سهام نواظر تصمي الرمايا
The arrows of glances that pierce the archers
يرمي فؤادي وهو في سودائه
My heart casts itself though in its darkness
ما أنس لا أنس له موقفا
What a companion, who has no companion
لما تراءت راية الربيع
When the banner of spring appeared
أطاعك مني القلب العصي
My rebellious heart has obeyed you
أبقيت بالجزع ما أبليت من طلل
You remained steadfast though you were worn by the ruins,
أحن إلى تلك الضحى والأصائل
I yearn for those radiant mornings and late afternoons,
خيالك من قبل الكرى طارقي ذكرا
Your imagination came to me as a harbinger of fate
لولا رجائي ثانيا للقائه
Were it not for my hope of meeting him again
لا تفخرن بألقاب تدل بها
Do not boast of titles that you use
أساير ركب الجو وهو كواكب
I travel with the caravan of the firmament, amid the stars,
أسهر الناظر بعض الليالي
The night vigil keeps some nights awake
أيا أهدى من الشهب السواري
O you who are more generous than meteors flashing in the dark,
هم منعوا مني الخيال المسلما
They denied me the surrendering imagination,
أإسماعيل لو أصبحت يوما
O Ismail, if one day you lived
أأحبتي الشاكين طول تغيبي
My longing beloved ones complaining of my long absence,
أرغمت آنف حاسديك بسفرة
You have just silenced your envious detractors with a journey,
أشتاق إليك يا بعيدا ناء
I yearn for you, oh distant echo
إليك شكوت الدهر يا خير أهله
To you I complained of fate, o best of people
أسعداني في الحب ما تعلمان
Grant me the happiness of love that you both know,
لي فرس صائم حكى فرس الشطرنج
I have a fasting steed that told of the steed of chess
إن الذي نصب المكارم للورى
He who set up virtues for people
نقبوهن خشية العشاق
They veiled them for fear of lovers
وقيت ما فيك أتقيه
You were granted all I wish to be granted
نمت بأسرار ليل كان يخفيها
She blossomed with the secrets of a night that used to conceal her,
ونارنجة بين الرياض نظرتها
An orange among gardens I saw her
مذجر عني هجرك صرف المقدار
Your abandonment compelled me though it was fate's decree
فما أنت إلا سعدي الأكبر الذي
You are none but my greatest bliss, for
ما كان لي في الخوز شيء سوى
I had nothing in al-Khuz but
تعسا لمن لا تستهل بنانه
Woe to him whose goodness is not spent
عدت بقلب في الوجد منتكس
I returned with a heart downtrodden in passion
وما ليلنا إلا سواء وإنما
Our night is but the same, and yet
لو كنت أجهل ما علمت لسرني
Had I not known what I have learnt, my ignorance would have delighted me,
كنا جميعا والدهر يجمعنا
We were all together as time brought us near
سل صدور الركاب ماذا الحنين
Ask the riders' chests, what is this yearning?
أقلا عند طيتي المقالا
Speak little in my presence, and restrain your reason.
إن أقمر الليل للسارين في حضن
If the moonlight is for travelers at night in an embrace
جاءت بقد كالقضيب غدا
She came with a slender figure in the morning
خفض عليك وإن أطلت تأملا
Lower yourself even if you are haughty in contemplation
كم في قلبي لعينكم من حرق
How many scorches in my heart are for your eyes,
هو ما علمت فأقصري أو فاعذلي
Whether you know or are ignorant, be brief or excuse yourself,
عداك الحادثات إلى عداكا
Events have led to your lofty rank,
هم نازلون بقلبي أية سلكوا
They descended upon my heart however they wished
لا مسعد لي إذا اعتراني الأرق
The sleepless night abuses me
أعزيز بغداد أعد نظرا لنا
My dear Baghdad, be prepared for us
أعد نظرة تبصر صنيع هواكا
Reconsider your passion's work and augment your thoughts which reveal its secrets.
أأجفان بيض هن أم بيض أجفان
Are they whitened eyelids, or is the white of eyelids?
ليالي أجملت فيهن جمل
Nights in which beautiful moments were made perfect for me,
جعلت فداك الدهر أغرز نابه
I sacrifice myself for you, time has bared its fangs
يا معرضا قد آن أن تتلفتا
O you who have turned away, it is time you show remorse
فديتك رابني الإعراض عني
I ransomed you, but estrangement from me was ordained
حسن الهجر مع القرب لعيني
Absence has beautified our meeting, my eyes
أضحى العراق بمسعود على خطر
Iraq is in danger with Mas'ud as its ruler
بيض طوالع من خيام سود
White tents from black tents were raised for your eyes from the farthest parts
أذاكرة يوم الوداع نوار
Memories on the day of farewell, the light of Anwar
ذكر المعسكر صاحبي ذكرا
My companion mentioned the camp, and his mention aroused thoughts in me,
سرى كما يسري القمر
He walked as the moon walks
لولا طروق خيال منك منتظر
Had it not been for the flashes of your imagination that I await
طرقت بليل من سناها مقمر
At night a moon lit up the sandy hill,
ألم تريا أن الحمول تسير
Do you not see that the caravans are moving on,
شاق الحمام إليك لما ناحا
The dove longed for you when it cooed,
من كان فوق سراة المجد معتليا
He who ascends the heights of glory
عهد هوى كنا عهدناه
The tryst of love we once made
الناس نظام أمرهم بالصبر
People, their affairs are ordered with patience
أقمر والبدر طالعين معا
The moon and full moon rose together
هل أنت بطولك مسعده
Are you made happy by your stature,
ألا ليت قلبي يوم أعلن وجده
O how I wish my heart had declared its passion
وطالع من مشرق القباء
Rising from the horizon in the dark night
قسما مني بأيام الصفاء
I swear by the days of serenity,
لا تستشرني في محال ظاهر
Do not consult me regarding the impossible, which is apparent
زمان قليل من بنيه نجيب
A brief time of select progeny,
رأينا عجيبا والزمان عجيب
We saw a wonder, and the age is a wonder,
عجبت وقد جئت ابن لؤم أزوره
I'm surprised, for I came to visit the son of meanness,
لما رأيت النجم ساة طرفه
When I saw the drowsy star blink its eye,
تجلت فقلت البدر لولا عقودها
Her beauty emerged, so I said, were it not for her braids, the full moon would envy her.
من حسن عهد للخليط المنجد
The beauty of the union with the beloved is unending,
كأنك بالأحباب قد جددوا العهدا
It is as if your loved ones have renewed their covenant,
بكل يمين للورى وشمال
With every oath to mankind and the left
قسما لقد رجع النسيم عليلا
I swear the breeze has come back to me ill,
إذا ضربوا بكاظمة الخياما
When they struck Kazima, the tents
أشبه دهري أبناؤه فهم
My fate resembles its sons, though unjust, not unjust they remain
شام برقا من أقاصي الشآم
A flash of lightning from the distant Levant
أتعرف أعلى الله أمرك أمرها
Do you know if God ordained your affair or hers?
أقول وقد ناحت مطوقة ورقا
I say, as a chained one wailed
فعلت هذه الجفون الضواري
These eyelids have made
أما تحية الطرف الكحيل
The greeting of the kohl-lined eye
إن قصرت بي عن الأغراض أيامي
If my days fall short of my goals
في قلبي نار لوعة تعتلق
In my heart there burns a fire of sorrow
أرى فكرتي في فنون القريض
I see my thoughts in the arts of poetry
هم منعوا منا الخيال الذي يسري
They have prevented me from the imagination that flows
أصون سمعك عن شكواي إجلالا
I protect your hearing from my complaints out of reverence,
سجعن فأذكرن العهود الخواليا
Recall our pacts of old, though man forgets
ولقد أقول لشمعة نصبت لنا
Indeed I say to a candle lit for us,
حسبك مني يا فتى خلعة
You're enough for me, my boy, so cease
نشر المنى طاوي السهوب
The wishes spread over the slopes of folded hills
نزل الأحبة خطة الأعداء
The loved ones descended with the stratagem of enemies,
أيها الراكب الميمم كرمان
O you who travels willingly
من سره العيد فإني امرؤ
Whoever is made happy by Eid, I am a man
جفاني مولاي الكريم كما ترى
My generous Master has forsaken me, as you see
أيا غائب الشخص عن ناظري
O you absent in person from my sight
شبت أنا والتحى حبيبي
I grew old while in love with my beloved
ما كنت أسلو وكان الورد منفردا
I did not greet when the rose bloomed alone
مجلسك العالي الذي أستقي
Your exalted assembly which I draw
يا أهل بغداد سقى عهدي بكم
O people of Baghdad, my covenant with you
هذا الوزير الأجل
This honorable minister
وافى كتاب من فتى كرم
A letter arrived from a noble youth,
وبيت مثل بيت الله فرد
A home like Allah's home, unique,
أما الغزال الذي أهوى فقد هجرا
The gazelle I loved has abandoned me
قلت لما قالوا غدا رأس شمس
When they said tomorrow the head of the kingdom's sun
سلا حادي الأنضاء أين يريد
Where are you leading, O guide of the saddlebags,
لم يدر ناعيك من إلي نعى
Your bereaver knew not who it was that brought me the mournful news,
مني قلق ومن سليمى ملق
I'm restless and from Sulaima comes my cure
ألا قل لسعد الملك دام علاؤه
Oh say to Saad of the kingdom, may his glory last,
قل لأمين الملك عن عبده
Tell the keeper of the kingdom, about his servant,
حقيق على الأيام أن يتحدثوا
It is the duty of days to speak
مقامك مجد والمسير معال
Your abode is glory, and traveling with you is the highest honor,
منحتك فاشكرها مقالة ناصح
A sincere friend's advice is a gift, so thank it
قل للرئيس أبي نصر لقد نصرت
Tell Abu Nasr the president, you have been victorious
وقد طالبوني مرهقين برده
They wearied me with their demand for its restoration
فلا تعجب أن خدي مجدب
Do not be surprised that my cheeks are withered
أخلاقه نكت في المجد أيسرها
أضم على قلبي يدي من الوجد
هل في عتاب الحادثات غناء
ألم يأن يا صاح أم قد أنى
وجهك عند الشموس أضوؤها
سيف عينيك عازم الانتضاء
لها في حمى مني وراء الترائب
حياءك من غصن بدمعي ثابت
قل لمن صار جاهه ذا نصاب
شاور سواك إذا نابتك نائبة
أأراكة الوادي سقتك غيوث
طربن لترجيع الغناء المهزج
ألا من عذيري من جوى في الجوانح
طربت لإلمام الخيال المعاود
قربا لي يا صاحبي بعيدا
أقول يا أهل تبريز لكلكم
أنت للعيد وهو للناس عيد
كأنني حين ألوي من معاطفه
شكوت إلى الحبيبة سوء حظي
قلب المشوق بأن يساعد أجدر
نصرت على الأعداء فليهنك النصر
حلفت بمن قد قابل اليوم بيته
وتيس عجيب الشكل يأكل باسته
بدا في فرعك الوخط
دم للعلا في ظلال العز مغتبطا
حيتك غادية الحيا من مربع
حيث انتهيت من الهجران بي فقف
محلك سام والعلاء به اعتكف
أهوى الظباء وليس لي أرب سوى
أشاكر أنا للأيام أم شاك
لا بأس وإن أذبت قلبي بهواك
غير العدا بسيوفكن قتيل
أصح عيون البابلية ما اعتلا
جوانح واجد وجفون سال
سألت ومن خلقي أنني
بغرة وجهك منا القسم

تظلم من طرف ظبي رخييم
لو شاء طيفك بعد الله أحياني
إذا الحمام على الأغصان غنانا
أعد نظرا فما في الخد نبت
كان المنى إذ تقضى ما عهدناه
صدر الرعاء وما سقيت ظمائي
يرعى الرجاء بنو أبيه فبينه
هجر الراء واصل بن عطاء
تغيب عني البيض إذ شاب عارضي
إذا لم يخن صب ففيم عتاب
الخؤر والجور خوزستان أصلهما
نفسي فداؤك أيهذا الصاحب
من حكم طرفي إذ يكون مريبا
أعد التأمل أيها المرتاب
حشو فؤادي فرح
أعطيت عنان قلبي المجروح
طلعت نجوم الدين فوق الفرقد
من القاتلات الصب بالهجر في الهوى
بكر العواذل أن رأين خصاصتي
لمن الركائب سيرهن تهاد
قل للعزيز عزيز الدين عن مقة
إليك وقد طوفن في الأرض برهة
حضرت لإسماعيل مجلس وعظه
أتيت قاضي الأهواز أطلبه
لقد شيعت ظعنا بالفؤاد
حظ من النصر والتأييد معتاد
هاك عهدي فلا أخونك عهدا
بنفسي حبيب هون البعد طيفه
كتبت ولي عين إليك مشوقة
يا راحلا بالسعد عن مقلتي
إلى ان تؤوب الشمس لا يغرب البدر
في الجيرة الغادين بدر
أقول وقد ذم الوزير زمانه
خذ القلم العالي إليك موقعا
أتراه بنفسه يذكر المولي
يا من نداه لزائري
سقيا لدارك هذه من جنة
البحر أجمع لو غدا أنقاسي
طلعت طلوع البدر يا ملك الورى
روحا ساعة متون القلاص
بملتقى لحظنا البرق الذي ومضا

وطيفك أما حين أضحي فطالب
يا من لصب بأطراف المنى علق
عدد لكم أن سرت في تشييعي
تحن إلى شرقي نعمان ناقتي

ألم تر أن الدهر يكتب ما تملي
أبا طاهر يا نجم أفق مكارم
حلفت بمعشر راحوا حجيجا
أصغى مسامعه إلى عذاله
كالغيث لكن ذاك من أمواهه
أتلك رياض أم خدود نواعم
يا أيها المولى الذي
طلعت علينا من سماء المكارم
أيها الراكب مهلا
لو لم ير في الناظر لي مبسمه
أعلى العهد القديم
ماذا يهيج غدوة شجني
يا خائضا في الأمر وهو يحب أن
ولم يك في من عيب
صيرت خوزستان حربا قائما
لست أنسى لياليا قد تقضت
