1. He made love descend upon my heart, so they reached
And in describing the agony of longing, poured out as much as they could

2. And a youthful suitor fulfilled his duty
To she who listened to his eloquence

3. He repeated the melodies for the one who longed
And so erased the words of the one who blamed which were uttered

4. What can your demon of blame do
When no conflict is found among the loved ones

5. If my infatuation with fair ones is agreeable
Making them happy was even more agreeable to me

6. My two friends, if you decide a fertile land
Do not hesitate to listen and convey

7. I remembered you while the land was dry, so
My eyes did not cease shedding tears until they overflowed

8. Among the living are kinsfolk, when a youth's
Passion for them preoccupies him, he does not rejoice to disengage

9. The charms of the gazelles darkened when they
Adorned themselves before me, chewing

10. In the round cheek of each beauty
You see the magic of her eyes humbling you

11. The hand of a cheek that will not harm you if joined
But separation makes me bitten by its sting

12. They traveled until they left our eyes
Filled with water and emptied the bosoms

13. Why should I love the setting ones when I see
On the horizon, moons placed high

14. Just when dreams intertwined with ignorance greatly
And white hair spread through my head

15. How many a night, O night, I shortened its length
And spent a life of unemployment, useless

16. Wasting it until the night folded its breast
And dusk returned at dawn, gloomy, blackish

17. I returned and none of the living noticed me leaving
Behind their worries, my eyes bleary

18. I lead the leather of separation in travel wherever
I find glory in the land attainable

19. With the flush of youth like one who has performed ablution
With morning water and so covered over

20. Perhaps one suffering from the agony of longing may be gratified
By the breaths of the passing winds that blow

21. Can I restrain my gaze, O companions, after
The land has adorned itself and flourished?

22. I see the work of the breeze at its utmost skill
As it opened the blossoms of the gardens and colored them

23. In the soft melodies of each coquette
Are notes for the melodies that chant at dawn

24. As if springtime at its prime and the birds
Call in different languages for its days

25. The days of Al-Malik Al-Zahir have come, so the poets
Of all those in it chanted

26. They attained a life in shade that never ceased
To clothe them in God's kindness for people

27. Harvested by the sword's edge in obeying guidance
When the arrogance of a transgressor became ripe

28. Fires are kindled for him at night for the villages
To cheer up the traveler, and in the morning for havoc

29. When he returns and then hides in his dignity
There is no nonsense in what is said, nor prattle

30. The land is governed by the right of his hands, majestically,
By the actions of hands that shed pearls when clasped

31. Light flows down his cheek of brightness
And so morning shines through the darkness, blurred

32. And I have not seen in kingdoms a source
For the stream of bounty more copious or broader than him

33. The brother of determination, steadfast with the sole of his might
Against the head of death, or he returns stained with blood

34. To him the generosity of lavish hands is little
Or the might of a piercing sword when unsheathed

35. He appeared the morning after violence, with anger raging
With two eyes like an eagle's in its nest

36. And for war, from its sharp fangs
When the thrust has become a tickling of the ribs

37. In each spear-head in the hands of warriors, a charity
You see giving drink to the horses' chests in the charge

38. When they thirst for the blood of an oppressor
The swords from it become crimson, dripping

39. O Gatherer of pardon, vast, whose shade
Is might, and rage that splits the skull when stirred!

40. How many a straying from obeying truth, deviant,
Was surrounded while rebellion wrestled the rebellious

41. The next day it penetrated his flesh with its sword
While the blood of disobedience in him oozed

42. I wonder at one with his insight before him
Yet he refuses to cease his long rebellion, writhing

43. When his neck draws near the spear point
He turns away like his name suggests, fleeing

44. Is there any escape for you except to you?
So by forgiveness, let him attain all he requests

45. Thus, every enemy, envious frustrator, and
Troublesome one, you see the earth, their place of wallowing,

46. This one covered in blood, slain
That one in tears, smeared

47. Every slanderer ransomed Ibn Ali the exalted
Showing property as ransom, pure

48. And every envious hater, failing in effort, deficient in mind,
When you have power in judgment, twisting

49. O you whose opinion and banner are exalted in kingdom
So straighten the world and religion, directing

50. The Commander of the Faithful and his Guardian called you
And he did not call people who evaded helping

51. You two remain like the sun and moon for the people,
Ideal pair, attainers of each sought thing

52. O Minister, seen by those who seek glory
As reaching even to the stars for the aspirant

53. To you I complain of the days' calamities
If you wished, from my heart you could draw them out at dawn

54. I bid farewell to a shrine that I could not find
With my grasp, ways to restore it, patching

55. I was given from the sea of bounties a drop
While many a drinker was told to find satisfaction, though he was not sated

56. Manner of a time that did not cease its stubbornness
To one like me, whether it gave or was distracted

57. I will gather the resolve, hurling
With the hands of steeds, so the open desert is roamed

58. And if I do not find rest, neither for the heart in the chest
Nor patience, if we go on breaking the heart

59. Yet I complain of the companion wrongfully
Though nearness - how little I enjoyed save through you!

60. I do not complain except of a time whose injustice
Transformed the balance of my state to disgrace

61. It changed me as if I am a faulty good
Cast into the sale of a stutterer

62. If not for the turns of fate I would not be an hour
Distracted from serving you with praise composing

63. How my mind strove in your praise
Yet my words were not as eloquent as your deeds

64. The days conveyed you the furthest of wishes
And fortune crowned you the forelock of desires

65. You lived a lifetime without end in sight
Though the circle tells only a part

66. I used to allot hopes in you
While from you excellence of good persists in hopes

67. I attained what I hoped in you, and now
It is time I am made an attainer of what I hope in you

68. You were my wish and the surplus of good does not cease to be sought
I attained my hopes in you, and now is time

69. That I attain what I hope for in you
