1. O people of Baghdad, my covenant with you
Has poured down like my tears through the night

2. If not for the calamities of fate, I would have
Come back to you before my death, a suitor

3. My longing for you prevails, if only
The long nights did not prevail over the prevailer

4. Between me and you a love is fermented
Encircling both non-Arabs and Arabs

5. With white scrolls that are swords
And shining blades that are stabbing daggers

6. And for the separation of thousands and the union
Which I kept watching it fragment

7. Intention alone was enough, so how about when
Fate brought together intention and calamities

8. Thus I find no way to send you messages
Nor do I find a messenger to write to you

9. And so my heart does not cease to witness you
While my person does not cease to be absent
