1. I swear by the days of serenity,
By all of time bringing the closeness of friends,

2. By my longing for their return,
If I obeyed longing during the long crying -

3. I only reserve my eye for tomorrow,
If Allah wills, the nearing of reunion.

4. None but my eye would heal my ailment,
If the loved one draws near after separation.

5. Let it glance at them, then bestow it on them for good news,
If they could be ransomed for my life one day of union, its price would not be too high.

6. Pure ones who troubled my life, vowing -
How can life be clear without the pure ones?

7. How much I endured, yet I have no endurance,
I pretended, yet my pride was frail,

8. Denying my passion out of caution
When the spying eyes glance at me,

9. And if a teardrop preceded me before them
I veiled my face with my cloak,

10. And if despair lifted my heart, I said to it:
"Pretend with hope!"

11. So Allah turned the injustice of the vow
With the house being near after estrangement,

12. And the situation ended so that they visited -
So we greeted with the coldness of estrangement.

13. From their kindness poured valleys -
It carried all coldness like barren land.

14. I won't forget the day they became my neighbors,
My solitude, mingling with my peers,

15. My asking every group about them,
About them, while traveling and staying,

16. My waiting for an apparition of them
Deceiving between my morn and eve,

17. My sleepless vigilance at night
With wonders and star gazing as my companions.

18. The stars of night shine among them
Like the crescent moon to us, excelling in light -

19. Like the Banu Hashim in valor, when
They encircled the chief of chiefs.

20. The full moon of generosity appeared
In eminence, if not a moon of the sky.

21. Who saw the day he was revealed and people
Craning their necks for glimpse -

22. Wearing a garment woven
From the pupils of saints' eyes,

23. Above a gaze stealing every great one's
Dignity and pride.

24. Turning away in anger, debating his opinion
If he disputed in audacious speech,

25. And from Allah a reverence upon him
In people's eyes grayed with splendor.

26. The young men were divided in shock
Where people clamored in supplication -

27. A hand gesturing, a joyous heart,
A mouth supplicating, and a glancing eye,

28. They saw the raincloud and lion together,
Without rivalry between sun and moon,

29. And greeted a noble spirit -
Its gift to the delegation the essence of generosity.

30. He surpassed the fathers in the field of supremacy
If you fear him, he is hard to deter.

31. He divided people's hearts between
Fear of him and hope in him.

32. A Hashimite who tied his affection
To the House of his Lord of noble building,

33. Revelation descends upon its inhabitants
For they are Allah's chosen elite,

34. With the guided trustees it is adorned
And the mighty kings at its borders.

35. What precedence they took to supremacy!
What footsteps pursued them in their footsteps!

36. A king who in the morning his power is feared
In the evening hoped for, destined for glory,

37. A palm tree grew from its branch
A fertile line of caliphs.

38. From his father the scholar he resembles
In eloquence, leniency, and wisdom,

39. He places things in their proper places
As you adorned achievement with success.

40. The miracle of his religion is his eloquent speech
From which springs of gift-giving flow to us.

41. Some of those who kept coming to him are bedouin
While others are discreet.

42. He's not questioned about his actions -
But it's upon people to follow his example well.

43. He does not strip himself of the robes of supremacy
In leaning or straightening.

44. The star in its orbit, however it turns
Is companion to the sublime.

45. A kaaba of glory, every day facing it
Is each settled or tent dweller of earth.

46. If you visit him you'll see a hand like a snake
When confronted, and a face of modesty,

47. He is like the towering mountain in stillness
And like the raincloud pouring forth generosity.

48. The starts fall short of his views
If estimated for life span or eminence.

49. With that sublime glance he surpassed
All gazes in the horizons.

50. And the Commander of the Faithful singled him out
From the sons of time in proximity and choice.

51. The advisor praises whoever it is, but not
Like the praise of the lineage nobles.

52. One craving did not attain what he wished
Entering amid restoration and decline.

53. When loved ones were content with union
The slanderers were discarded in the wild.

54. If you ask me about my time and I
Am of experience for its children and test -

55. For you O Amr al-Ala Ali is the apex
Of your noble fathers' sea.

56. It did not walk the path of poets.
It senses time and creatively judges

57. What poetry has no precedent in decreeing.
Its praise of a people whose praise

58. Is sheer truth without any fabrication.
Through you, O Abbasids, some turns of fate are seen

59. For as long as I've lived taking shelter in you
I've never ceased to intercede through you swiftly

60. With my poetry's transmission out of loyalty
If you spread out, it's out of gratitude to you

61. Or if you folded, it's over affection's concealment
And when praise flowed into an army

62. I am its standard bearer
With a poem, whenever I inked it

63. It shook the edges of the generous kings
I said, and the caravan with empty saddles

64. Their livelihood slippered with soft treading,
They rose early while dawn was in the folds of night

65. The face of a beautiful lady cheerful in her veil,
The barefoot vanguards driving away fatigue

66. And stirring the steeds with prodding,
Whenever they galloped the wasteland

67. Gifted them a downpour like a flood,
And if one donned a gown and mantle

68. Her shadow became like shoes for her.
Satisfaction, O guide of the caravan, satisfaction!

69. For satisfaction from people is my goal.
He is the most generous of people in gifts

70. Through him from people I gain independence,
But the proud one has a soul that grew

71. In ancestral honor and great fathers -
A presence of yours adorned its neck

72. With a system securely winding,
And it rose in rank to where

73. No merit remains for rising.
If your pride reaches its imagined end

74. Then may your life last without end.
Live an exemplar for the seekers of greatness

75. Through you they show guidance and guidance-following.
This is a state of glory and supremacy

76. That gathered the elite through generosity,
Its standards became supported

77. When cared for by your eye of concern,
And through you it became needless

78. Never needing anything but self-sufficiency,
So remain its strong right hand forever

79. Supporting its victory with complete aid.
O right hand! If all of existence called

80. With left hands, they would lack loyalty.
Your generosity never ceases to make you beautiful to us

81. In a bracelet forged from excellent praise.
