And my tears have flowed except for my torment

3. My tears water the cheeks of the meadows
And cool the heat of an unsympathetic stranger

4. Of no use is the pouring rain
If it misses the places of my beloved

5. They broke their vows the day they left
Revealing cold glances and aloof eyes

6. They reneged on reunion after promising it
How often they promised union but did not fulfill it

7. In the crescent-shaped caravan were charming ones
Who on the day of farewell cast me languishing glances

8. That captivated my love-sick heart
How can what is gone be swayed by a fading shadow?

9. You were stingy though you had my sincere love
But the miser's love is ever marred by stinginess

10. Had you conjured my phantom in your sleep
My person would have been dragged to you from afar

11. But no healing is possible
When the healer leans toward the ailing

12. Of what stirred joy in me were phantoms
As dusk fell, drawing down its veils

13. While my companions halted at the edges
Of the wadi, tethering the camels' reins

14. The arm of a beauty becomes my pillow
And the shadow of a maiden my quilt

15. I take pride in my own glory
If my tribe's honor does not suffice

16. Every gazelle-eyed one owns my heart's secret
Languid of glance like the unsettled dust

17. The down on his cheek narrates the start of separation
As ants creep on the polished sword

18. Onlookers bow down before it
When it shows from the bend of his cheek

19. As kings regarded a missive
With "Abdul Jalil" in the title

20. A king whose kindness and justice spread
Above all match and parallel

21. He shaded the world's children gloriously
As daylight has no need for guide

22. His palm scatters wealth from it
How can water settle in a drain?

23. His pens surpass peaks of greatness
Not by length, but by steadfastness in crises

24. The prayer of the minister of two states
For acceptance of his words' honesty

25. You reformed this religion's order when
Its star declined on the horizon of loss

26. You were weary of atheist hordes until
You left their throngs as barren wastelands

27. On a day when God's faith was mighty
And disbelief took the station of disgrace

28. You washed the land's surface of them
With a downpour of their blood

29. And when the East's armies came as flights
Of locusts swarming flock by flock

30. You drove them back in retreat
Though they crept like torrents rushing wild

31. So they fled without looking back, terrified
Winding through the plains in panic

32. When you saw their fear seeping in
Though the friend was cut off from friend

33. You pardoned the offenders though they did wrong
With the disposition of a kind, righteous man

34. Slow to anger when provoked
And no violator of promises

35. Sound in judgment, never hasty
Or wavering at the fool's impulse

36. You reject severity and acts of clemency alike
Like the defects of a palace's towers

37. None we have heard of is nobler in nature
Or farther from the acts of the unjust

38. Most generous toward the apologetic
Kindest toward the remorseful offender

39. So when the people broke their oath
Refusing to accept even the littlest

40. Obstinately blocking their own deliverance
Like rain blocked by rugged hills

41. You summoned against them a day of might
Whose dawn erupted with bright flashes

42. You unfurled the banners' plaits within it
And the swords slid swift from their sheaths

43. You surged at them wildly on horseback
With horsemen charging unrestrained

44. A piercing, fatal blow scattered their horde
And a stroke like that of valiant warriors

45. The war stripped away from their midst
Captive, wounded, or dead

46. As though they were erected idols
Toppled from a lofty sanctuary

47. You were created, backed by glorious ancestry
Achieving all that you desire, guaranteed

48. When a rebel spurs his steed toward you
To race it, it halts in stillness

49. When he hurls a sword in his right hand
His staff becomes limp in his grip

50. I slipped through the siege to reach you
Like a star freed from the rainy night

51. I came bare-armed, hastening
To wear your ample coat

52. You were Mecca's house of kindness
So pilgrims throng to you in seasons

53. Bare when we reach you on pilgrimage
Robed when you permit return

54. Fulfill my hopes and grant
My hands victory, for you are my wish and solution

55. Live in the shade of brief days
Passing you in lengthy life
