As he stood tall and firm
١. بحياةِ أيْرِ أبي الرَّجا
لمّا استَوى وتَسكْرَجا
2. And when it pressed against him
It entered his raiment and left again
٢. وأتاك مُمتَدّاً فأد
خَلَ في حشاكَ وأخرجا
3. Yet you were modest and did not allow
Your garment to be disheveled
٣. إلا احتشَمْتَ ولا تكو
نُ إلى هجائك مُحوِجا
4. For you saw and were lauded
For how you were and how you came to be
٤. فلقد رأيتَ وقد مدحْ
تُك كيف كان وكيف جا
5. One who would strike others with praise
How would you expect him to disparage?
٥. مَن كان يَصفَعُ بالمدي
ح فكيف ظنُّك إن هَجا
