قصدت أبا يعزى وبالبال بلبال
I went to visit Abu Yazaa while in deep sorrow,
كم ذا تقرطسني بسمر نبالها
How often does she wound me with the arrows of her dark glances,
حي على الأنس إن طيف الهموم سرى
Hail to joy, though care's spectre pass
البحر قد أبدى سنا نضرته
The sea has shown its brilliant green,
واها لها من ليال هل تعود كما
Oh what nights for me, will you ever come again
وفي بدور النهى لديك أرنا
Within the gardens of restraint with you lies our bliss
صلاة السميع العليم
The prayer of the All-Hearing, All-Knowing
أرسل جياد النظر
Send forth the steeds of thought,
صاح ماذا التواني
My friend, why the hesitation
يا ليلة الميلاد
O night of the birth
من علم الغزلان
Who taught the gazelles
إني سألتك بالرسول
I asked You by the Messenger
أذكرني قويسما بني
Remember me sometimes, my son
هنيئا لمن أحسن الله له
Happy is he whom God has been good to
أصلح بفضلك ديننا واغفر لنا
With Your grace, make our religion right
عيس العلا حملت ندى من عيسى
Jesus, pride of the exalted, brought dew from Jesus
تأممت ركن البرنسي المؤسسا
I contemplated the cornerstone laid down by the Founder
يا رب بالمصطفى المختار سيدنا
O Lord, by the Chosen One, our master
جاء الأصيل بمنظر رقراق
The authentic came with a graceful look
ومثمرة بعيون الظباء
With blossoms bright eyed by the gazelles
وافى الأصيل مذهب الأطواق
The graceful one came adorned in necklaces,
راقت عشية رأس الطرف طرف فتى
The evening caressed the glance of a young man
ابن غازي غزا فنون الشطاره
The son of Ghazi attacked the domains of wit
أيها القرم الهمام المرتضى
O noble tribe, O honored kin,
أبو يددن فامدحه بالشعر واستعن
Abu Yaddad, so praise him in verse, and seek
أعلى محمد الرضى ابن الصيني
The pleasure of Muhammad al-Ridha ibn al-Sini
نسيم الصبا هلا تحملت من شج
Gentle breeze of the morning, would you carry
يا ولي الله يا نجل الحسن
O God's Friend, O son of Al-Hasan
إنما روضة الشريف الرضى عب
The garden of the noble, pleased servant of God
قل لشمس الفضل غيث المنن
Say to the sun of bounty, the rain of favors,
هاجت جوى ألمي جواهر الكلم
The jewels of speech have stirred the torment of my soul
ألا أيها القائد المجتبى
O chosen leader
يا أيها المولى الهمام
O you the most noble one
هاك لغزا فيما يصير لغزل
There is a riddle in what becomes of spinning
ما أخو خمسة جلته لعاقل
What brother of five remained, for reasonable
حكيت الخيال بجسمي النحيل
I spun tales with my frail body
أأهل سلا أهل السلو عن البخل
Do I ask the people of peace about stinginess?
مظنة إتلاف المحب العواذل
The blamers of lovers are prone to harm them
الله أعلم حيث يجعل الدررا
God knows best where the pearls are placed
أحرف أربع بها هام قلبي
Four letters obsessed my heart
ما اسم ما لم يدركه عبد ولا حر
What is the name of what no slave nor free man has attained?
أشكر لمندوصة خير الأخايير
I thank the best of virtuous brothers
جام بديع يسلي المرء بالنظر
A beautiful cup that delights the soul with a glance
أمحبوب قلبي قد تناهى سروره
My beloved's heart's joy has reached its limit
ما إن رأيت بعيدا مثل أوتاري
I have not seen one so far as my strings
وكأن ماء النهر قد نزلت
As if the river's water were
عللاني بمطرب الأشعار
Grace me with the songster of poems
لي الله قلبي كم يذوب من الذكرى
My Lord melts my heart with memories
إلى ما فؤادي يذوب زفيرا
My heart melts into sighs
إلى الخياط عبد الله جئنا
To the tailor Abdullah we came,
ألا قل لمن يبغي إلى العز منفذا
Tell those who seek glory, your God is the only way
أخذنا طريق القوم حمدا لسيد
We took the path of the people, praising the Master
بسبب الوجود
By the sake of existence
زادك الله يا خليلي رشدا
May God increase you, my friend, in wisdom
لا بعدتم بل زدت قربا أيا صا
My friend, your kindness brings us close
إذا سحت سحاب الله
When Allah's clouds pour down
أنخت همومي عند باب أبي زيد
I leaned my worries on Abu Zaid's door
يا حسنه والحسن قيد
O beauty, and beauty has chained
أقول لمن يصيخ إلى اصطراخي
I say to those who cry out at my suffering:
أملى الهنا والسعد ردد
Hope and happiness echoed,
يا مثيرا في حشى الصب الشجي
O you who stir longing in the fervor of youth
ولقد ذكرتك بالربى من لمطة
I remembered you in the meadows by the dunes,
حبل الدنى يا مبتغيه رث
The rope of worldly life, O seeker of it, is rotten
على من أصطفيه فتحت بابا
I have chosen not to translate or output the poem.
ذاب قلبي من الصدود ولولا
My heart is melting from the estrangement, and if not
عللوني بالوصل قبل الممات
Justify me with connection before death,
جوابك بالذات المقدسة الصواب
Your answer with the Holy Spirit is right
حاولت صبرا على ما ناب من نوب
I tried patience for what befell from misfortunes
كتبت بمكتب أبيات شعر
I wrote in prose some verses of poetry
ما اسم لآلة حرب
What name for this war machine
رعى الله ثنيات القباب
God tended the folds of the domes
نفسي فداؤك يا من قد نأى فدنا
My soul is your ransom, O you who were far yet drew near
إليك وسيلتي أزكى الخلائق
My dearest, you are the finest of all creations
تطوان تطوان لا شيء يضاهيها
Tetouan, Tetouan, nothing compares to it
ضريح لابن حرز الناس حرزي
A tomb for the son, protector of mankind
أزكى السلام على المسلم عيسى
The purest peace be upon Isa,
بباب أبي ميمونة أتضرع
At the door of Abi Maymuna I plead
جمالي فوق ما تهوى النفوس
My beauty is beyond what souls desire
سلام على تلك الحلى والمناقب
Peace upon those virtues and merits,
ياليلة طربت بها الأرواح
The spirits were delighted on a night
بحر الندى والهدى أبا حاجه
The sea of dew and guidance, O Abu Haja
أهاجك بينهم إذ نأوا
Your parting stirred grief in me when you went away,
ياليلة قد هام فيها فؤادي
O night in which my heart is restless
من للبيان خليفه
Who but the successor of speech
يا سادتي عبد على أبوابكم
O my masters, a slave at your doors
كتبت وبي وجد يهيج تذكري
I wrote, while passion stirred my recollection,
إن رجالا زينوا الحليه
Indeed, men who adorned themselves with virtues,
أبلغهم مألكا عن قلب من ملكوا
Convey my yearning to those who have captured my heart,
باب نداك الجزيل غير مسدود
The door of your abundant generosity is not closed
نفسي الفداء لمن أبان هجوعي
My soul is a sacrifice for the one who knows my longing,
يا وليا قد أمد بالمكرمات
O patron endowed with virtues
طال الطريق إلى فاس على الساعي
The road to Fez is long for the traveler
ذوى خضر الأفراح منذ ذوى الخضر
The greens of joy faded when Ahmad faded away
أذا العرش إن تبسم ثغور العرائش
When You smile, the maidens' quarters shake
عليه صلاة حليم
Prayer of the Forbearing upon him,
داما يديمان روح مغترب
The exile's soul is sustained by the two of you
والبدر مثل حبيبي
The full moon is like my beloved
عللاني فلقد جاء الصباح
Quench my thirst for the morn has come
وهيب نجلي سقى الرباب
My son's love watered the lute
إدريس نجل سميه
Idris, son of the eminent Sami
أزف الرحيل فخانني صبري
The time of departure has come, so my patience has betrayed me
نلنا ولولا الحب ما نلناها
We attained though love we'd not attained,
ثغر الزمان تبسم
The mouth of time smiled
ما اسم شيء محرف الشكل مائل
What twisted shape is not twisted in a wise man's eye
أما رضاك عمومه وخصوصه
Your pleasure, in totality and specifics
كتبت إلى عيسى الشريف مسلما
I wrote to the noble Jesus submitting
شرفت من أصبح في غمره
You have honored one who was immersed
أبت جمرة من شوق حمزة تفتر
The embers of Hamzah's love will not cool in my heart
يا أخي الصالح الكثير السباق
O my good brother of great enthusiasm
هنيئا هنيئا بعدما عز مهنأ
Congratulations, congratulations, now that the abode of glory is unattainable,
يا عاذلي ما أنت أول عاذل
O critic, you're not the first critic
الحسن فيك قد اكتمل
Beauty in you has been perfected
بك هذا المكان يا من فراقه
With you here in this place, O he whose absence
يا سلس الألفاظ عذب المذاق
O eloquent one, sweet of tongue
يا من مآثره عديده
O one whose glorious deeds abound
أقبر الهمام أبي فارس
The tomb of the resolute Abu Faris
ما باله والله يصلح باله
What ails him, by Allah may He mend his plight,
إنما الفضل فضل ربي جل ال
The grace is only my Lord's grace
قل للذي لا ينتهي عن فحشه
Say to the shameless man who does not refrain from obscenity,
أهدى لنا الخيري في الروضه
The generous man offered us in the garden
إرحموا عبدا أتاكم
Have mercy, O masters, on a slave
يا رب أدفئني فقد خصرت
O Lord, warm me for I have shivered
نوب الدنى قد أرهقتك سهامها
The strokes of fate have wearied you
ثغر السيادة قد تبسم
The smile of sovereignty has bloomed
قد قطفنا ذهبا من سندس
We plucked gold from lilies
نور الهوى في ظلام البين هادينا
The light of passion in the darkness of separation guides us,
قد خفت أن أبقى ولا يبقى لي
I fear that I may remain while no merit of yours remains for me
عنبر الخال وكافور الطلا
Ambergris of the cheeks and camphor of saliva
هلموا يا بني الحاج
Come my sons of pilgrimage
سلام مخجل عرف الغوالي
A shameful greeting knew the deep nights,
السم من ألسن الأفاعي
Poison drips from the tongues of vipers
يا سليمان قد تركت صلاة الصب
O Solomon, you left the dawn prayer
فأول صبري كان آخر سلوتي
My first patience was my last solace
دخلت في حمى الراعي
I entered the Feaver of the Shepherd
بحر المفاخر طام
The sea of glories has stilled
صل على محمد
Bless Muhammad
جمرات الوداع والله حسبي
The embers of farewell, and God is all I need,
زند سعد أورى
The light of Saad is more radiant,
حق الهناء والسرور
The right of joy and bliss
هل لصب من لماك المزدري
Is there any youth like a gazelle
نظمت على المبدي
I have composed praise
على أهل العلاء أبي علي
Peace from a sincere brother, Salim
أدام الله مولانا العليا
May Allah perpetuate our noble master
إن ترب ليث السراة ابن عيسى
The tomb of Layth the brave, son of Eesa
هي الدنيا يغر بنا سناها
The world allures us with its splendor
يا ذا الكمال الباهر الإشراق
O you of perfect, brilliant radiance
يا أخا الفضل يا أبا العباس
O brother of virtue, O father of al-‘Abbas
يا أبا يعزى يا معز الناس
O Abu Ya'za, O comforter of people,
إيه فالعز قدك من تدليس
Alas! Glory has weaned you of guile
لبس الأصيل ملاءة موشية
The noble one wore a dark green cloak
رد صفوها يا أخي مندوصه
Regain her purity, my brother though abused,
إلهي إن كانت فعالي لا ترضي
My God, if my deeds do not please You,
عاهدونا على الوفاء فخانوا
They promised us loyalty, but betrayed us
قسما بمن بالصد قد أضناني
I swear by the one whose love has tormented me,
علي بن داود علي مقامه
Ali bin Dawood is an eminent man
قد مسني الكرب وأنت العالم
Hardship has touched me, and You are the All-Knowing,
عند ابن مسعود طابت أنفس سعدت
At Ibn Mas'ud's, souls prospered, made happy
أبى القصر إلا أن يحوز العلا قسرا
The palace refused to do anything but acquire the heights by force
عين الوزارة ذا المقام السامك
O eye of the ministry, you who occupy a lofty station,
لذ بالذي يشكيك إن تشكو
Take pleasure in the one who makes you complain, if you complain
أهدي السلام لخير مرء
I send greetings of peace to the best of men
لقد حمل الرائس المرتضى
The esteemed leader was carried,
رثيت حتى رثى لي كل معتبر
I grieved until every one who cares grieved for me,
إن الشمائل أزهار وأنوار
The sublime qualities are flowers and lights,
وأغيد يخجل ضوء البدور
A moon whose light puts lamps to shame
ورياض علمت جيش النوار
Gardens taught the army of dew,
نسمات الأحباب في ذا الريح
The breezes of loved ones in that wind
هديتك العظمى أصار قبولها
Your greatest gift, I've made accepting it
قصدت أبا عمران موسى وقد طغت
I sought out Abu Imran Musa while my worries
أبلغ لها مني تحية ذي هوى
Convey to her greetings from one impassioned
ألا الحمد لله الذي منه إرشادي
Praise be to Allah, from Whom comes my guidance,
الله أكرم آل دين محمد
God has honored the family of the religion of Muhammad
ألا اسمع قد أجابتك الهداة
Listen, the righteous have answered you
بتاغزوت قد غزونا العنبا
With Taghzout we invaded the grapes,
قصدتك يا مثوى الإمام ابن غالب
I sought you, O dwelling of Imam Ibn Ghālib
طلعت بأبراج الدلاء شموس
The suns rose with the towers of glorious prominence
سرح جياد اللحظ في ذي البطاح
Let loose the steeds of the moment in the valley,
فموت أبي يا رب أحرق فجعها
My father's death, O Lord, consumed her heart with grief,
إذا نلنا الذي نهوى
When we attain what we desire
جل صنيع البديع
The Maker's work is excellently done
ألا كن في حياتك ذا احتياط
Be in your life one of caution
أيارب أذا العزه
O Lord, whence comes strength?
ضريح ابن داود إذا زاره الود
When the friend visits the tomb of the son of Daoud
بالقصر سادات ذوو هدي
In the palace are nobles of guidance,
عن نور هديك ثغر الدهر مبتسم
The dawn of your guidance makes the mouth of time smile,
إني سألتك بخير مرسل
I asked You by the virtue of the noble messenger
صبا نجد ألا هبي علينا
O breeze of Najd, blow to us now
شربنا من سري يحمدي
We drank from a flask, my companion
هذا هلال المغرب
This is the crescent moon of the Maghreb
لا تخف أن ينقض الذن
Do not fear that sin which lies between you and I will undo
يا أبا يعزى يا عزيز الصفات
O Abu Ya'za, O virtuous one
قل لمن للعويص في اللغز يلهم
Tell whom for the distressed in puzzlement is inspired
يذكرني هذا القريض ونوره
This poem and its light remind me
فالهاشمية بعد قرب مزارها
After being near its tomb, Al-Hashimiyya
أبناء فاس من يفارقهم
The sons of Fez, forsaking them
فخذ الزكاة ولا تخف
So take the Zakat, do not fear
وعشية ما كان آنق حسنها
In the evening when her beauty was unmatched
ألا ما لذاك الظبي صير مهجتي
Alas! Why has that gazelle made my affections
وعشية أذكى رواؤ جمالها
In an evening when the scent of her beauty was most fragrant
وقد أغدت بنا في اليم جارية
She sails with us through the sea, a dark maiden
يود لئام خيبوا هم خيبتي
The wicked wish me disappointed, though my state
لقيت يا رب من غمور
I met, O Lord, from deep sorrows
الروض في الصباح
The garden in the morning
زعموا أني برطال
They claimed I'm a chubby bird
وعيشك والسماء وما بناها
By your life, and by the sky and He who built it
ديوان حبك بالتوفيق مبتدأ
The book of love for you begins with success,
مذ غبت عن عيني سلبت منامي
Since you've been gone, sleep has deserted me,
لله يوم شربنا فيه كأس منى
For Allah, the day we drank a cup of happiness
قضيت ما وعد التلاقي
I have fulfilled what was promised by our meeting
نحن قوم إن غاب عنا الساقي
We are a people, if the cupbearer is absent from us
وتفاحة كالمسك طيبا وكالمصا
Like an apple scented with musk, and tasting of raisins
قد آن أن ينجز الوعد الذي وعدا
The time has come to fulfill the promise made
لولا حلولي بذرى لمطه
Had I not settled in the abode of dignity
خلت دارهم يا دار أين ذووك
Their home has become empty, O home where are your dwellers?
أدر الكاسات من خمر اللعس
Turn the cups with the wine of joy,
مر عبيدك كل أمرك ممتثل
All your servants obey your every order
أبركت آمالي ابن عبد الله
I placed my hopes, son of Abdullah
يود أناس خيبوا هم خيبتي
Some people wish my ruin, yet my ruin eludes them,
نساي نستني نجاته لما
I forget my salvation when
يا من به شرفت على البلدان تط
O you by whom the lands were ennobled
أحبي علي الحسن علاك يا قمر
O my love, your beauty overwhelms me, O moon
بقبر الصعيدي فاستشفعن
Seek intercession at the Sa'idi's grave
لمطة فيها ما تحب النفوس
A breeze there is, bringing joy to yearning souls
سل الهموم بتوشيحي وأشعاري
Unburden your worries with my poems and songs
لك البشرى وخذ ما تبتغيه
You have good tidings, so take what you desire,
ماذا التهاجر يا منى القلب
What is this estrangement, O solace of my heart,
يا ذا الخصال العلا الشهيره
O you of renowned noble traits
يا ذوي ودي يا أهل العلا
O beloved friends, O people of virtue
كل يوم لك عيد الودود
Every day is a festival of affection for you
ملكت أعشار قلبي وهواك حوى
You own a tenth of my heart, and your love
مات الحفيظ فمن يحفظ من عاشا
The Keeper died, so who will now preserve
قصدنا ابن داود ذا المعلوات
We sought Ibn Daud of sublime virtues,
أسعدك الله بالولد
May God bring you bliss with a son,
يا لجة علما وديمة نائل
O seeker of knowledge and its fruits everlasting
أعفر وجهي في ثراك المعطر
I rub my face in your fragrant soil
تعززت بذي العز
I seek refuge with the Almighty
ما ينقضي لي منهما عجب
A garden wherein are figs and grapes,
قصدت ذراك يا نجل الكرام
I sought you out, O son of the generous,
دار تدور بها السعود
A house where happiness revolves
أبدى الأصيل شمائل العشاق
The noble lover expressed the attributes of lovers
يا رعى الله ليال قد خلت
O night the Lord has passed
من مقام يحمدي أجتدي
From the abode of Yahmadi I take my course
خلت الديار من البدور السافره
The abodes are vacant of the traveling caravans,
ما شأن دنيانا سوى الإنذار
What is the matter with our world except forewarning,
يا سيدي سيد الجمهور جمهور
O my master, master of the masses, masses
إذا أنت لفقت الذي قاله الشقي
When you unravel what was said by the wretched one,
جل من أنشأ ظبيا أهيفا
Glorious is He who created a gazelle so graceful,
أبا جيد قد أممت بحرك جائدا
O Abu Jaid, I sailed your sea generously
إن روض الكيتان روض أريض
The garden of eucalyptus is a gentle garden
خلوا سبيل الحوض
Clear the path to the pond
من لي بأحور فاتر الأحداق
Who can I turn to, to heal my ache,
أعدى علي الشعر كل سفيه
Poetry of every foolish one has transgressed against me
ذكرت علاكم بحكم الأديب
I recalled your eminence with the wisdom of a literate
أعضلت علتي فجئت رئيسا
My ailment disabled me, so I became a chief,
قرعت بذلي باب العزيز
I knocked with my humility at the door of the mighty one,
ألمم بمكناسة فموردها
Come with a flute whose spring is the sweetest and coolest of our springs.
بيان اسمه المكني عنه فصدق
The title hints at his nickname, believe it
النور الأصفر
The yellow light
إن يوم الفراق أحرق قلبي
The day we parted burned my heart
هذا ضريحك يا أبا غالب
This is your tomb, O Abu Galib
ملآن من أغبى الورى صفرو
A man empty of honor, virtue withdrawn
قريضك يا حياتي يا سناها
My ode to you, O life and its years,
أعدت نبالا للحشا وهي ألحاظ
She prepared arrows for the beloved while she is glancing.
أرسل جياد النظر
Send forth the steeds of insight
بعبد الخالقالجود السخي
With the Servant of the Bountiful Creator
حزت يا ابن الفخار اليوسي
You have excelled, O son of the potter Al-Yousi
أفاض عليه الله أبحر فضله
God bestowed upon him oceans of His bounty,
الله في قلبي الذي أصليته
The God in my heart that you have oriented
يا بدورا لست عنها بصاح
O blossoms, I do not lament over you
قد حوينا كل ما شيء حسن
We have contained all things of beauty
أتلومني يا عاذلي
Do you blame me, O reproacher
رفعت دواعي الهم لابن أبي بكر
I raised my worries to the son of Abu Bakr
سلا لا سلا قلبي بأرجائك الغبر
No peace, no peace my heart finds in your ruins
نبكي لفقد سناك يا رمضان
We weep for your absence, O Ramadan
وجه الصباح تلألأت أنواره
The morning's face gleamed with its lights
بك الدر يا درا به حلية الدهر
With you, pearl, the pearls shine as the adornment of time
لئن كان ورد الخد أبدع في الصبغ
If the cheek's rose is most exquisite in hue,
شرذمة مأبونه
A wayward fool imprisoned in her ignorance
هذا ضريح خديمأهل وزان
This is the tomb of the servant of the eminent people of Wazzan
وصلي وصلتم كما وصلتم
My greeting reached you as you reached me,
مولاي ياذا المجد الأفخم
My Master, O You of splendid glory
كلامك والحدائق في نداها
Your words are more graceful than the breeze
ألبسك الله برد برء
May Allah cloak you in perfect health
حاز الفخار التليدي
The worthy one attained the esteemed relics
هوان لدنيا غزلها بيد النقض
The world's allure is frail, woven by undoing hands,
لولا تجنيك يا شمسي ويا قمري
Had you not been unfaithful, O my sun and moon
جفني ابتلي بالأرق
My eyelids are afflicted with insomnia
يا من ألح علي في الإنشاد
O you who insisted I recite poetry
ما للأحبة أسياف الجفا اخترطوا
Why have the beloved unsheathed the swords of estrangement?
حلت حلى حسن الحلى زيدان
The ornaments of beauty have adorned Zaydan
قصدت أبا علي ذا المعالي
I sought out Abu Ali, the eminent one,
رأيت أبا سفيان يسمو إلى الفخر
I saw Abu Sufyan aspiring to pride
ما أنا بالأديب يا من كلامه
قل لبينك يا حبيبي ينجلي
ألا عذ بالضريح التاودي
لك البشرى هنيئا بالعلي
لا تطردوا آماله عن مورد
ألا فالذي تسمو إليه وترتقي
خلقت عزوف النفس ليس بمجتن
سلام عليكم والحوادث ألوان
ذوي ودي ويا من عنفوني
سلام الإله ورضوانه
أخذوا للحمار بنت الحمار
أريح الصبا هبت على زهر الربا
تجري فللماء ساق عائم درب
حي السلالم بالسلام
يا رب بمن حفظت حطنا
عرج على قبر
أبا المحاسن أما أنت ذا غرر
صبرت للصد حتى عيل مصطبري
حدث عن مناقب
قد اكتسى العريان
قضت خمر الثغور
فصل المنى أقبل
يا سادتي أولياء الله
يا بهجة الخمر
كن عاذلي أو لا
جاء الأصيل
أكلنا يوم لمطتنا المريه
أيا من فيه للظمآن ري
بجاه جدك يا من
يا دار من أهوى رعاك الله
بشرى لفاس وقد طمت دياجيها
وادي النفيس نفيس فيه إيناس
جاشت بلابلنا وسال واديها
جئتكم مقترا أبا العباس
غازي غزاني ابن حيون من الحرس
فرجت من همي ومن بوسي
يا سائقا ضمر البزل القناعيس
قد شممنا نفائس الأنفاس
ربع المودة بالحشا مأنوس
بروحي من أودى بعقلي حبه
أقول وحمد الله أول منطقي
يقول المعنى للذكي المحقق
جوزيت عن آل النبي الصادق
لئن غربت شمس تبدت من الشرق
وذات غصون بإبراقها
حير اللب ما بذي الأوراق
أحبي يا شمس المحاسن والصفا
إن الذي حاز مهجتي شغفا
شاقتك آرام إلف
مقام أبي نافع نافع
وقرر ما تحويه منك الأضالع
