1. O night the Lord has passed
Like blossoms in their prime of youth,
2. And days gone by that were pledged to me,
Where rain has watered the pledge none can alter,
3. Where is neither care nor sorrow but only
The tunes of the lute and passed cups
4. Of wine pure as blossoms poured
In flagons that mirror their sparkling red,
5. Reproach the resolute heart for its drinking,
Though none can reproach such drinking of wine,
6. With gazelles whose hearts we have won,
Who came back to us after estrangement,
7. In gardens like carpets outspread,
With flowers like carnelians and all sweet herbs,
8. Shall I ever find, now those lands are far,
Such joy in union as once was there?
9. To those camps, from this saddened exile,
I send, like the wind o'er meadows, my greeting!
