1. I sought you out, O son of the generous,
The pillar of glory, Abd al-Salam.

2. I sought your protection, protector of those who come to you,
While my heart longs ardently.

3. I sought you, leader of people, most noble,
To frequent your generosity without contention.

4. I sought the ocean of your vast knowledge in tumult,
In my time of burning need.

5. Is there in the cup, the cup of virtue, any favour
That would lift up the heart from that wine?

6. And awaken the mind from its stupor, so it remains
Enlightened through the ages in the darkness?

7. A wine whose like the ages never contained,
That was not locked away out of reach.

8. He who partakes of it gains praise,
While he who turns from it earns blame.

9. By your life, and the oath to it is mighty,
You brought forth the light from its veil.

10. Upon it is the prayer of my Lord and greetings,
Exalting its glory until the final day.

11. If resolve stirs in the resolute,
The resolute will rise up from the graves.

12. Upon your tombs the lofty place of rest,
The breeze of greeting and peace.
