1. Your parting stirred grief in me when you went away,
And the pain of separation you have long borne.
2. Your patience wears thin when you bid them farewell,
And your heart breaks when they weep.
3. Their company troubled you at the bend of the river,
Where they pitched their tents.
4. Their halt was between the north wind
And the morning and evening breeze they desired.
5. The necklace of wishes is unbroken,
And your happiness depends on how close they approached.
6. May God forgive them and make them prosperous,
As they have forgiven you on the day you meet.
7. To you came their days in hardship,
And from an affliction they have passed and relented.
8. They conversed with you in affection until it was pure,
And they were not stubborn in estrangement from what they desired.
9. They gave you a cup blended
With the greatest of joys they gave.
10. And they presented you with a garden of their company,
With the fruits of wishes they had picked.
11. May God maintain their pledge in the meadows
As my loved ones maintained their pledge there.
12. And days of intimacy they had in vigilance
They protected from my joy there what they protected.
13. Nights their gathering delighted me,
And their jest cheered me when they jested.
14. And it cures my heart of its sickness
With the remedy of their chanting when they chanted.
15. And I composed from poetry an elegant poem
That makes the reciters forget what they have recited.
16. The life has quenched you, O cypresses of loftiness,
For in you they quenched my thirst that they have quenched.
17. O meeting point of the river and the curve,
Submit, for in you they were gentle to me.
18. O breeze of the garden, be fragrant through them,
For they have flourished and remembered.
19. O breeze from the scent of their company
That cools the heat of longing they have baked!
20. O glance of compassion to their prisoner!
O mercy to those they have taken captive!
21. God's peace and pleasure be with them wherever they settled,
And my longing for them still rises
22. Like the sighs of my heart the day they left,
And my love for them still comes to rest
23. Where the winds of passion subside.
