1. Had you not been unfaithful, O my sun and moon
Rather, O my life and hearing and sight
١. لَوْلاَ تَجَنِّيكَ يَا شَمْسِي وَيَا قَمَرِي
بَلْ يَا حَيَاتِي وَيَا سَمْعِي وَيَا بَصَرِي
2. I would not have complained, nor would the dejected one say anything
Who will do me justice against the squint-eyed one with languishing eyes?
٢. مَا قُلْتُ مِنْ ضَجَرٍ مَا قَالَ ذُو خَوَرِ
مَنْ مُنْصِفِي مِنْ سَقِيمِ الطَّرْفِ ذِي حَوَرِ
3. I rode the sea of passion recklessly
And the souls of lovers are souls that have been deprived
٣. رَكِبْتُ بَحْرَ الْهَوَى فِيهِ عَلَى غَرَرِ
وَأَنْفُسُ الْعَاشِقِينَ أَنْفُساً حُرِمَتْ
4. If only they were burnt with fire, they would not be pitied
From every soul that patience has quenched and extinguished
٤. لَوْ أَنَّهَا أُحْرِقَتْ بِالنَّارِ مَا رُحِمَتْ
مِنْ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ سَقَاهَا الصَّبْرُ فَاخْتُرِمَتْ
5. A gazelle that is endowed with beauty that has been divided
Between the sand dune, the branch, and the flower
٥. ظَبْيٌ لَهُ صُورَةٌُ فِي الْحُسْنِ قَدْ قُسِمَتْ
بَيْنَ الْكَثِيبِ وَبَيْنَ الْغُصْنِ وَالزَّهَرِ
6. Whoever hopes for his affection has scorned it and for her
He has armed himself with a glance that is not for him or her
٦. مَنْ يَرْجُ عَطْفَتَهُ ازْدَرَى بِه وَلَهَا
وَقَدَّهُ بِلِحَاظٍ مَا لَهُ وَلَهَا
7. With it she has seduced someone overtly, with it she has seduced one infatuated
His glances have resulted that he will not live for her
٧. أَغْرَتْ بِهِ دَنِفاً أَغْرَى بِه الْوَلَهَا
آلَتْ لَوَاحِظُهُ أَنْ لاَ يَعِيشَ لَهَا
8. A love-struck one, even if he were as hard as stone
٨. صَبٌّ وَلَوْ أَنَّهُ فِي قَسْوَةِ الْحَجَرِ
