1. I swear by the one whose love has tormented me,
And made me drink cups of estrangement,
١. قَسَماً بِمَنْ بِالصَّدِّ قَدْ أَضْنَانِي
وَسَقَانِ كَاسَاتٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَانِ
2. In the morning he tears my spirit with his glances,
And the fabric of my garment with humiliation and disgrace.
٢. وَغَدَا يُمَزِّقُ مُهْجَتِي بِلِحَاظِهِ
وَكَسَانِ ثَوْبِيَ ذِلَّةٍ وَهَوَانِ
3. You are the embodiment of eloquence,
Adorned with the pearls of expression.
٣. مَا أَنْتَ إِلاَّ حَائِزٌ خَصْلَ الْعُلاَ
مُتَضَلِّعٌ بِلآلِئِ التِّبْيَانِ
4. O son of nobility, their gathering clouds have roared,
And they donned the learned and refined attire.
٤. يَا ابْنَ الأُلْى هَمَعَتْ سَحَابُ أَكُفِّهِمْ
وَتَوَشَّحُوا بِمُثَقَّفِ الْمُرَّانِ
5. They marched against the champions arrogantly,
And grew close to Adnan or Qahtan.
٥. وَعَدَوْا عَلَى الأَبْطَالِ فِي صَهَوَاتِهِمْ
وَنَمَوْا إِلَى عَدْنَانَ أَو ْقَحْطَانِ
6. From every courageous tribe on the day of battle,
Showing joy when the two armies meet.
٦. مِنْ كُلِّ قَرْمٍ بَاسِلٍ يَوْمَ الْوَغَى
بَادِي السُّرُورِ إِذَا الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ
7. We swooned intoxicated with the wine of your eloquence,
Bent by your poetry, nay, by your magic.
٧. هِمْنَا بِشِعْرِكَ بَلْ بِسِحْرِكَ فَانْثَنَتْ
أَلْبَابُنَا سَكْرَى بِخَمْرِ بَيَانِ
8. Whatever word you chose was gentler than love,
And sweeter to the ears than fresh branches.
٨. مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ لَفْظٍ أَرَقَّ مِنَ الْهَوَى
وَأَلَذَّ فِي الأَسْمَاعِ مِنْ عِيدَانِ
9. With excellent meaning like a delicate breeze,
Sweeter than gazelle drafts from a meadow.
٩. وَبِدِيعِ مَعْنًى كَالنَّسِيمِ لَطَافَةً
أَحْلَى مِنَ الرَّشَفَاتِ مِنْ غِزْلاَنِ
10. Al-Buhturi and Abu Firas and Al-Mutanabbi
Are not as subtle as you, nor the young Hamadani.
١٠. مَالْبُحْتُرِي وَأَبُوفِرَاسٍ وَالْبَهَا
بِأَرَقَّ مِنْكَ وَلاَ الْفَتَى الْهَمَذَانِي
11. You have won brilliance, excellence, and greatness,
And preceded in the field of this lofty affair.
١١. حُزْتَ الْبَرَاعَةَ وَالْيَرَاعَةَ وَالْعُلاَ
وَسَبَقْتَ فِي مِضْمَارِ هَذَا الشَّانِ
12. To you this ode sends the freshest greeting,
More fragrant than the scent of a garden.
١٢. وَإِلَيْكَهَا تُسْدِي إِلَيْكَ تَحِيَّةً
أَذْكَى شَذاً مِنْ نَفْحَةِ الْبُسْتَانِ
13. Qumri did not boast of the beauties of maidens,
Nor did the branches of Al-Ban pine.
١٣. مَا اهْتَاجَ قُمْرِيٌّ بِأَفْنَانِ الرُّبَى
وَتَمَايَسَتْ هَيْفَا غُصُونِ الْبَانِ
