O you who insisted I recite poetry

يا من ألح علي في الإنشاد

1. O you who insisted I recite poetry
And praise of my master is the livelihood of poets

١. يَا مَنْ أَلَحَّ عَلَيَّ فِي الإِنْشَادِ
وَمَدِيحُ شَيْخِي غُنْيَةُ الْقُصَّادِ

2. You have reached my hearing, and that is my desire
If only I could attain some of my desires

٢. أَبْلَغْتَ أَسْمَاعِي وَذَاكَ مُرَادِي
لَوْ أَنَّنِي أَحْظَى بِبَعْضِ مُرَادِي

3. As for praise, it is my skill
Long practiced and woven into my habits

٣. أَمَّا الْمَدِيحُ فَإِنَّهُ مِنْ صَنْعَتِي
قِدْماً وَحَوْكُ بُرُودِهِ مِنْ عَادِي

4. But I fell short, as is my right, in praising one
Who was praised by ranks of glories

٤. لَكِنْ عَجَْزْتُ وَحُقَّ لِي عَنْ مَدْحِ مَنْ
مُدِحَتْ بِهِ زُمَرٌ مِنَ الأَمْجَادِ

5. And his ambitions refused to incline to
Nobility through fathers and forefathers

٥. وَأَبَتْ لَهُ هِمَّاتُهُ مَيْلاً إِلَى ال
تَّشْرِيفِ بِالآبَاءِ وَالأَجْدَادِ

6. And he saw perfection in his perfection stemming
To fathers and children

٦. وََرَأَى الكَمالَ بِأَن يَكونَ كَمالُهُ
يَسْري إِلى الآبَاءِ وَالأَوْلاَدِ

7. And to time along with place like the rise of
Lights from him and the place of birth

٧. وَإِلَى الزَّمانِ مَعَ الْمَكانِ كَمَطْلَعِ ال
أَنْوارِ منْهُ وَمَوْضِعِ الْمِيلاَدِ

8. Oh Constantinople! Your pride is pride
That you were his place of origin over Baghdad

٨. إِيهٍ قُسَنْطِينَةٌ فَخَارُكِ فَافْخَرِي
أَنْ كُنْتِ مَنْشَأَهُ على بَغْدَادِ

9. And rise high no matter how the palace boasts
And looks down on the glories of Sinbad

٩. وَتَطاوَلِي حتَّى تَفُوقِي قَلْعَةً
نُسِبَتْ لَدَيْكِ إِلَى بَنِي حَمَّادِ

10. You bore in the late age one so virtuous
His time surpassed those past

١٠. وَارْقَيْ عُلاً مَهْمَا تَبَارَى وَازْدَرَى
بِالْقَصْرِ ذِي الشُّرُفَاتِ مِنْ سِنْدَادِ

11. And you produced a full moon whose lights
Dazzle like the blazing star

١١. أَنْجَبْتِ فِي العَصْرِ الأَخيرِ بِفاضِلٍ
سَادَ الْمُقَدَّمَ عَصْرُهُ مِنْ هَادِ

12. With its men the countries are exalted for they are like
Pearls in necklaces and stallions in battle

١٢. ونُتِجْتِ بدْرَ مَحَاسِنٍ أَضْوَاؤُهُ
مُزْرِيَةٌ بِالْكَوْكَبِ الْوَقَّادِ

13. And rain for the cloud, or water for
The thirsty, and spirits for bodies

١٣. بِرِجَالِهَا تَسْمُو الْبِلاَدُ فَهُمْ لَهَا
كَالدُّرِّ فِي اللَّبَّاتِ وَالأَجْيَادِ

14. Our Fez is more deserving of that for in it is
The beacon, a beacon of guidance abiding

١٤. وَالْغَيْثِ لِلْمِجْدَابِ أَوْ كَالْمَاءِ لِ
لَّهْفَانِ وَالأَرْوَاحِ لِلأَجْسَادِ

15. And the sea is the sea of knowledge which casts its sweet
Fresh springs, the essence of guidance

١٥. وَلَفَاسُنَا أَوْلَى بِذَاكَ لِكَوْنِهِ
فِيهَا الْمَنَارَ مَنَارَ رُشْدٍ بَادِ

16. And the meadow a meadow of mortals which fruits
The wishful hopes of visitors

١٦. وَالْبَحْرَ بَحْرَ الْعِلْمِ يَقْذِفُ لُجُّهُ الْ
عَذْبُ الْمَوَارِدِ جَوْهَرَ الإِرْشَادِ

17. And the rain a rain of virtue which pours its floods
Of plenty, dispelling distress

١٧. وَالرَّوْضَ رَوْضَ الْبِشْرِ يُثْمِرُ دَوْحُهُ
دَوْحَ الْمُنَى بِمُؤَمَّلِ الرُّوَّادِ

18. And the towering mountain of forbearance which no
Quaking shakes amidst crumbling crags

١٨. وَالْغَيْثَ غَيْثَ الْفَضْلِ يُمْطِرُ وَبْلُهُ
وَبْلَ الْغِنَى بِمُبَدِّدِ الأَنْكَادِ

19. And the full moon a moon of beauty whose light shines
For the fortunate in blessing and prosperity

١٩. وَالطَّوْدَ طَوْدَ الْحِلْمِ لَيْسَ يَسُومُهُ ال
رَّجَفَانُ عِنْدَ تَزَلْزُلِ الأَطْوَادِ

20. And the sun a sun of nobleness, brilliant of majesty,
Vanquishing its rays over enviers

٢٠. وَالْبَدْرَ بَدْرَ الْحُسْنِ يَسْطَعُ نُورُهُ
لِلْمُجْتَلِي بِالْيُمْنِ وَالإِسْعَادِ

21. Lasting for us and whoever it gives joy
Particularized with the praises of Hammad

٢١. وَالشَّمْسَ شَْمْسَ النُّبْلِ بَاهِرَةَ السَّنَا
تَقْضِي لأَِشِعَّتِهَا عَلَى الْحُسَّادِ

٢٢. دَامَتْ لَنَا وَلِمَنْ يَرُودُ بِهَا الْمُنَى
مَخْصُوصَةُ بِمَحَامِدِ الْحَمَّادِ
