- أبو طالب كفل المصطفىAbu Talib took the Chosen One under his care,
- أثبت ما عاينت من نحوهاI affirmed what I beheld from her side
- أثمة أرباب الصبابة يممواAre there masters of ardent longing who have sought
- أحبك حبا جاوز الحب بعضهI love you with a love of which even a part surpasses love,
- أحسن زهد المرء في رغبهA man's finest renunciation lies in his turning away
- أحلى من الإنجاز وعد مماطلSweeter than fulfillment is the promise of one who delays;
- أخلصت في الحب ويا حبذاI have been sincere in love—and oh, how wonderful,
- أدين لليلى بالوفا غير جاهلI owe Layla fidelity, not unaware
- إذا المولى لعبد صار سمعاIf the Lord becomes a servant's hearing,
- إذا امتنع الإمكان إلا بموجبIf contingency is impossible without a necessitating cause,
- إذا عصم التمسك من ظلالIf protection from shadows comes through holding fast
- إذا كان الخلا منه محالاIf a void without Him is impossible,
- إذا كان شرع الله في الدين واحداIf God's law in religion is one,
- إذا كانت الآيات من عند خالقIf the signs come from a Creator,
- إذا كانت حياة المرء نوماIf a mortal’s life is but a sleep,
- إذا وصف العشاق معنى جمالكمWhen lovers describe the essence of your beauty,
- أراقبه خوفا وأرجو مع الحياI watch Him in fear, and I hope with bashfulness.
- أراقبه في حالة الخوف والرجاI watch him in a state of fear and hope.
- أراقبه وهو الرقيب بخاطريI watch him, while he is the watcher within my thoughts.
- أراني البعض في بعضيI see myself as the part within my part,
- أراني عنك محدودI see myself held apart from You,
- أراني محبوءا على كل حالةI see myself favored in every state,
- أرضى وإن سخط العذول علي منI would be content though the jealous found fault with me because of
- أرى مشهدي بي منك عنك خصنيI see that my witnessing of you, within me and from you, has singled me out,
- استعلموا الرأي فيما لا مجال لهThey consulted reason about what lies beyond its scope,
- اسم الحبيب متاعThe beloved's name is a delight
- أشكو إلى الله جهل قومI complain to God of the ignorance of a people
- أصبحت في الكون بلا حيزI have come to be in the cosmos, without a locus,
- أطعت أمر الهوى فيكم بمعصيتيI obeyed passion's command concerning you by defying
- أغبى الورى من لم يجد نفسهThe dullest of humankind is he who does not find his soul
- أقبل صبحي وسفرEnglish translation unavailable
- أقل بمالي وروحي الفداءI deem my wealth and soul too little a ransom
- ألا هل إلى داري بوادي طويلعAh, is there a return to my home in the valley of Tuwayliʿ,
- الاسم للوصف غدا باطناThe name has become hidden in relation to the description,
- الحال في غيب المشاهد سترهThe state's concealment in the unseen realm of visions
- ألحزم زين للفتىPrudence is an adornment for a young man,
- الحق في الخلق خلقThe Real in creation is creation;
- الراح كالنار في زجاجWine is like fire in glass;
- الشوق أكثر من أنLonging is too great for
- العقل في جوهره واحدThe intellect in its essence is one
- الفيلسوف بيعينه أنا والذيI am the philosopher himself; and he who
- المطل والونمعد أذىDelay and [unclear word in the source] are a harm
- النفس في العقل إذ تصفو لرؤيتهThe soul, within the intellect, when it grows clear enough to behold it,
- إلى الرحمن نسبة كل عبدEvery servant’s relation to the All-Merciful
- إلى نار سوى نارTo a fire other than your fire
- إليك أنسي بناسي زاد إيحاشيMy intimacy with you has deepened my estrangement from my people.
- أما وإحسانك القديم وماTruly, by your kindness of old, and what
- أمر مهول فيه خطب جسيمA dreadful matter, fraught with grave import:
- أمرتني بستر كشف غطائيShe commanded me to conceal the unveiling of my veil,
- آمنت بالعجز وبالمعجزI believed in powerlessness and in the one who renders powerless,
- آمنت بالمعجز والعجزI believed in the one who renders powerless—and in powerlessness;
- أمي الشريعة والمقيم لها أبيMy mother is the sacred law, and its upholder is my father.
- إن التي باختفائها ظهرتIndeed, she who appeared through her concealment,
- إن التي سمحت لنا بوصالهاIndeed, she who granted us union with her,
- إن التي هام الأنام بحسنهاIndeed, she whose beauty has enraptured humankind—
- إن الذي أوجدني حسنهIndeed, the one whose beauty brought me into being—
- إن الذي تيمني قربهIndeed, the one who has enthralled me—his nearness
- إن ترد الجاهل فهو الذيIf you would know the ignorant man, he is the one
- إن قلت حل بذا وحاIf you say, 'He dwelt in this and
- إن كان فعلي له مراداIf my action is willed by him,
- إن لم أخالف زاجر العقلIf I do not defy reason's restraining voice
- إن لم يزدني العلم في حبكمIf knowledge of loving you does not increase
- إن لم يعدني في قلاكم عائدIf, amid your aversion, no visitor comes to see me
- أنا بالموت عشت في الأحياءThrough death I lived among the living,
- أنا في فقدي وجوديIn my loss I find my existence.
- أنا ملآن بحبيI am full of my love,
- أنا والورى باسم الهوى سيانI and all humankind would be alike in the name of love,
- أنزه العين عن علم يصورهI hold the Essence beyond any knowledge given form
- أنسى بذكرك من ناسيك أوحشنيThrough remembering you, I forget whoever among those who forget you made me lonely.
- إني أرى كليك الجزئيIndeed, I see your particular universal,
- أهل النقا لا بقيت بعدكمO people of al-Naqa, may there not remain after you
- أهلا بداعي إلهيWelcome to my God's summoner!
- أول وجدي ماله آخرThe beginning of my rapture has no end;
- أي طب لداء دار حماهاWhat cure is there for the ills of a house whose guardian
- أيا جيرة بلوى الأبرقينO neighbors at the sand bend of al-Abraqayn,
- أيا من حبه حاليO you whose love is my state,
- أيسرني أني أسمى طائعاWould it please me to be called obedient,
- أين تهوي قدمي عن ذي الهوىWhere can my foot fall, away from the bearer of love?
- أين لا أنت كي يفر إليهWhere are you not, that one might flee there
- بالسمع من بصر الفؤادThrough hearing, from the heart’s sight,
- بحث المحق مع العنيد لقولهSeeking truth with the obstinate because of his words
- بدت لعيني بالستور والكللShe appeared to my eyes behind the veil and the locks
- بدر بدر ثغرهA full moon—his mouth flashed forth;
- بدر بم من القباBamm's full moon—from the robe,
- بدر سبى الناس حتى الشمس قد كلفتA full moon has captivated the people—even the sun has become enamored
- برق الكرى أهدى لعيني الأبرقاThe lightning of slumber brought al-Abraq before my eye
- بسكري صحوي في هوى من أحبهMy sobriety lies in my intoxication with love for the one I love.
- بعدا لقوم جهلهم جهل ذي الAway with a people whose ignorance is that of one possessing the
- بعلم معنى المعانيThrough knowledge of the meaning of meanings,
- بك وصلي عمن سواك انقطاعيMy union with you is my severance from all but you.
- بنطق سمعي جرى لسانيMy tongue flowed with the speech of my hearing.
- بنقط زاد في الخطWith dots he added to the script,
- بنى العقل هبوا لأمر عجابSons of reason, rouse yourselves for a wondrous affair;
- بي مبغض لي على محبتهI am afflicted with one who hates me, despite my love for him.
- تالله ما آمن بالله منBy God, he has not believed in God
- تبدى كالهلال وصار بدراHe appeared like the crescent and became full moon
- تبصر بنور الحق تلق حقيقةSee with insight by the light of Truth, and you will find a reality
- تجردت نفسي عن نفسيMy soul stripped itself of my self;
- تجلت فانجلى نجمي وبدريShe revealed herself, and my star and full moon became clear,
- تجلى الحق بالخلقThe Truth manifested itself through creation,
- تدبر ما أصاب تجدك قومPonder what has befallen you, you will find a people
- تدرع في لقاء الخطب صبراArm yourself with patience when facing calamity;
- تعاقبا لعقابي منك بالكمدTwo things have taken turns tormenting me with grief because of you:
- تعالت ذات مولايMy Lord's essence is exalted
- تعالت ذات مولايExalted is the essence of my Lord
- تعالت ذات مولايExalted is the essence of my Lord
- تفرق الغاوون في حبكمThe misguided differ in their love of you
- تفرق عني العاذلون وأجمعواThe reproachers parted from me and agreed
- تمتع في شبابك بالأمانيDelight in hopes while you are young.
- توهم الجاهل المغرور عن سفهThe deluded, ignorant man imagined, out of folly,
- جوركم في القرب أشفى إلىYour cruelty in nearness is more soothing to
- حاجج لمن قال أنا أنت بالسبArgue with whoever says, “I am you,” through verbal abuse,
- حتام بالأعراض عن جورهHow long, through accidental qualities, shall I turn away from my
- حث الركاب بنا والقوم قد وقفواThe mounts sped on with us, while the people had stopped
- حجب العمى أهل الهوى عن رشدهمBlindness barred the people of passion from their sound judgment
- حديث غرامي في هواك قديمThe tale of my passion for you is old;
- حرام دمي لمن أهواه حلMy inviolable blood is lawful to the one I love;
- حمول لأعباء الهوى غير طالعPatiently bearing passion’s burdens, never turning
- خلعت بلبس العز ثوب تنكسيClad in the raiment of glory, I cast off the robe of my abasement.
- داء ثوى بفؤاد شفه سقمAn illness settled in a heart worn thin by sickness.
- دار سلمى سقاك دمعي الهاميO Salma’s abode, may my streaming tears water you
- دور الوجود لعينيThe cycle of existence, to my eye,
- ذكر الفتى آية نسيانهThe young man's remembrance is a sign of his forgetting;
- ذكر ربي لغيره أنسانيRemembering my Lord made me forget all but Him,
- رب حسن من النفوس قريبMany a beauty is close to souls,
- رشا عجبي منه وقد راح قاضياA young gazelle—how I marvel at him, now that he has become a judge
- رض النفس بالصبر الجميل على الأذىDiscipline the soul with beautiful patience in the face of harm;
- رفضت سنة أهل الزهد معتمداI deliberately rejected the way of the ascetics,
- رويتم أن نبي الهدىYou related that the Prophet of guidance
- زعموا أن كل من أعمل الرأيThey claimed that everyone who exercised judgment
- زينة الفقر في العفاف وحق العلمPoverty's adornment lies in self-restraint, and knowledge's due
- سرى طيفها وهنا فلله ما أهناHer phantom came late at night—by God, how blissful
- سعي الفتى لسوى كفA young man's striving for more than enough
- سفهاء قومي في المحبة سفهواThe fools of my people, in matters of love, deemed foolish
- سنة الله في الذين هدى التسليSubmission is God’s way among those He has guided;
- سوى حبكم يسلى وغيري له يسلوAnything but your love may be forgotten; others, not I, may forget it.
- شاغل القلب هوى عذب اللميEnglish translation unavailable
- شبهت فرق الحبيب حين بداI likened the beloved's hair-parting, when it appeared,
- شربت من الحميا ما سقتنيI drank of the strong wine she served me,
- شرفي وعزي أنكمMy honor and glory lie in this: you
- شمسان خالهما الندامى أربعاTwo suns whose blemish regrets have made fourfold
- شهدت مغيب النفس في مشهد النفسI witnessed the self's vanishing in the self's place of witnessing.
- صددت فصد عن عيني رقاديYou turned away, so sleep fled from my eye,
- صفا جسدي حتى بدا منه قلبهMy body grew clear until its heart showed through it,
- صقال سوالف وجه الحبيبThe polished sheen of the sides of the beloved’s face
- صمت اللبيب يزينهThe discerning man's silence adorns him,
- ضلوا وقد ظنوا الهدى عندهمThey went astray, though they thought guidance was theirs,
- طلب الدليل على الضحى رأد الضحىSeeking proof of morning light at the height of morning
- طليق دموع لا يفك له أسرOne freed by tears, whose bondage is never undone—
- ظننت حسبت خلت زعمت أن قدI thought, I reckoned, I supposed, I claimed that I had
- ظهور الحق في العالمThe Truth manifests in the world
- عاب لما غاب عن مشهد قلبيWhen he was absent from the sight of my heart
- عبيد اللات فيما جاء عنهمThe worshippers of al-Lāt, according to what is reported of them,
- عجبي لرقة وجه كلفي بهI marvel at the delicacy of the face I am enamored of;
- عرفت الخلق والأمرI knew creation and the command,
- علام والقد منك عادلWhy, though your figure is upright,
- علق الفؤاد بحب ظبي لاعبMy heart is captivated by the love of a frolicking gazelle
- علم التصوف ليس يدKnowledge of Sufism is not
- علم أهل القلوب عين القواليبThe knowledge of the people of hearts is the essence of forms;
- على كل عين من الخلق عينOver every eye of creation is an eye
- عليك اتكالي إله الورىUpon You I rely, O God of creation,
- عند ولي الخير شر العبادTo the guardian of goodness, the worst of servants is
- عودوا يعد بكم الزمان الماضيReturn, and with you bygone time will return,
- غايت وجدي في هواكThe extent of my rapture in loving you—
- غناك عن الشيء نفس الغنىYour independence of a thing is wealth itself;
- غيري يغيره عن العهد القلىAversion turns another from his pledge,
- فراغي بك مشغولMy leisure is occupied with you,
- فرض المحبة ود شيعة حبكمLove’s obligation is affection for those devoted to loving you,
- فضلت بوجودي فيكم كل واجدThrough my being among you, I surpassed every ardent lover,
- فنى وجودي في وجود الهوىMy existence vanished in the existence of love.
- في شرق اسم الحب أهل الهوىIn the east of love's name [uncertain reading], the people of passion
- قالوا أشر رمزا معنى الهوىThey said, 'Hint symbolically at the meaning of love,
- قالوا اكشف الحال المغطىThey said, “Unveil the concealed state,
- قالوا الجماعة قلت آل محمدThey said, “The community”; I said, “The family of Muhammad”—
- قالوا أنخ بحمى ليلى فقلت وهلThey said, “Make your camel kneel in Layla’s sanctuary.” I said, “And is there
- قالوا تحدث بالصحيح من الThey said, “Speak truly: from whom comes
- قد بدت البغضاء منهم لناTheir hatred for us has indeed become clear,
- قد كان لي خل خلا بمسرتيI once had a dear friend who departed with my joy;
- قل لمن رام للشريعة تتميماSay to whoever seeks to complete the Sharia:
- قل لمن قال إن باري البراياTell whoever said that the Maker of creatures
- قلبي بأخلاقه وخلقتهMy heart, in its character and its form,
- قلت عندي وعندكم عمنI said: I have, as you do, from him
- قلت للغائبين عن مشهدي فيكI said to those absent from my presence in you
- قلت للندمان لما غادرتI said to the boon companion, when
- قليل بالورى مثليRare among humankind is one like me—
- قوامك العادل المفدىYour upright figure, for which I would give my life,
- قول الإله جل في كتابهThe word of God—exalted is He—in His Book
- قوم بهم شفع الإله رسولهA people with whom God paired His Messenger,
- كانوا على الشرك يولون الجزيل ويحThough polytheists, they bestowed generous gifts and pro—
- كتابي مشهود لكل مقربMy book is witnessed by everyone brought near.
- كسرت بالوقت سيفيI broke my sword against time;
- كل المحاسن جزء حسن محمدAll beauty's graces are Muhammad's traits
- كم صرعت من أسد العرينHow many lions of the lair have been felled
- كوني في كون حبيبي الذيMy being within the being of my beloved,
- لا أوحش الله منك مغناناMay God never let our dwelling be desolate without you.
- لا حظ بالفوز لصب بكمNo luck in winning for one infatuated with you
- لا رحت للآمال منك مبلغاMay I never go forth bringing my hopes from you to fulfillment,
- لا غير من لا غيره لي إلهNone but the One besides whom there is no other is my God.
- لا كنت إن كان لقلبي التذاذMay I cease to be, if ever my heart should find delight
- لا نلت منكم باللقا آماليMay I never attain my hopes through meeting you,
- لا ولا في الهوى يصح لمن لاNo loyalty in love is sound for one who does not
- لا يوحشنك في طريNever feel lonely on the path
- لأحمد في الذكر وصف عظيمAhmad has an exalted description in the Scripture:
- لإقدامي لأقدامي مخاضThrough my daring, my feet have a ford
- لام العذول عليهThe faultfinding censor reproached me on his account.
- لبانتنا هواك وما لبينىOur hearts have fallen for you, though we have no intimacy with you
- لبيبهم أحمق من باقلTheir sage is more foolish than Baqil.
- لذ بالثناء على الإلهSeek refuge in praise of God
- لست بذي وجد إذاI am not possessed of rapture if
- لغيري برقك الخلبFor others is your deceptive, rainless lightning,
- لقلبي عن مطاوعة اللواحيMy heart rebels against heeding the reproachers
- للحق في كل وجهThe Truth has, in every face
- لم تبد لي من بها وجدي وبلوائيShe in whom lie my longing and affliction has not appeared to me
- لم يبق لي مني الهوى بقيةLove has left me no remnant of myself
- لم يحرم ما كان حلا علىWhat was lawful was not forbidden to
- لم ينل ساكن إليك سكوناNo one resting in you has attained repose,
- لم ينل سائق الركائب رشداThe driver of the riding camels would not have found guidance
- لما انثنى عني الرفاق إلى الحمىWhen my companions turned away from me toward the sanctuary,
- لما دعاني الهوى من ربة الكللWhen love called me from the lady of the canopies,
- لما مررت بتربة مرت بهاWhen I passed by a patch of earth once crossed by
- لمغيب قلبي في هواكم مشهدMy heart's vanishing in love of you has a place of witness:
- له الدهر آن والزمان الذي انتهىFor Him, eternity is an instant; and time, which ends
- لهوا عن الحق فألهاهمThey were heedless of the truth, so he distracted them
- لو أن روحي يستتم نعيمهاIf my soul's bliss were made complete
- لو رأى العذال يا حارIf the reproachers, O Har, could see
- لو كان ما زخرفوا وقالواIf what they embellished and said
- لو كانت النفس بالآلات مدركةIf the soul could perceive with instruments
- لو كنت مني ما غبت عنيHad you been of me, you would not have been absent from me,
- لو لم يكن ناظره ساحراHad his eye not been a sorcerer,
- لواجب الوجد في كلي لكلكمFor the longing due, within all of me, to all of you,
- لوجدي جنس نوعه فصل عدتيMy longing has a genus whose species is the defining distinction of my resources.
- لوجودك الجزئي كليات أجناFor your particular existence, the universals of the genera
- لولا سنى ربة الخدر بداHad the radiance of the lady of the secluded chamber not appeared,
- لي خمرة راس بها الراسI have a wine through which the head rose to eminence.
- لي في خلوتي بجلوة محبوبيIn my solitude, through my beloved's unveiling,
- ليت حادي مطيهم يوم سارIf only the driver of their mounts, the day he departed,
- ليس زهد الفتى بتحريم حلA young man's asceticism does not lie in forbidding what is lawful,
- ليس وصف الفضل فضلاDescribing virtue is no virtue
- ما الحكم في الناس إلاJudgment among people falls only
- ما أومض البرق بين الطلع والبانNever did lightning flash between the palm blossoms and the ban trees
- ما زلت أنكر بعد عرفان الهوىI still deny, after knowing love,
- ما شهدت الطرف الذيI did not behold with the eye what
- ما كابر الحس مثل قومNone have defied the senses like those
- مازال يخفيني الغرام بحبكمPassion has kept concealing me through my love for you,
- متى ادعيت وصولا بالغرام وليWhenever I claim union through ardent love, while I have
- متى شمت برقا للصوارم لامعاWhenever I glimpse the sharp swords’ gleaming lightning,
- متى كان للصب في مذهب الهوىWhen has the lovesick one, in love’s creed,
- متى ما صفا للحق قلب بدالهWhenever a heart grows pure for the Truth, there appears to it
- متى منا محب مدعيناWhenever a lover is claimed as one of us,
- مدار الحق حق الحقThe pivot of Truth is the truth of Truth
- مدار الحق مركزهThe pivot of the Real is its center,
- مذ أفقرت ممن أحب الأربعSince the dwellings became empty of those I love,
- مر بي بالآب والإبنHe passed by me, singing of the Father and the Son,
- مرابع سعدى للعيون مراتعSu'da's spring dwellings are pastures for the eyes,
- معنى المعاني اسمه ظاهرThe meaning of meanings—his name is manifest.
- مكرهم معروف أهل النهىTheir schemes are known to people of reason,
- من الصهباء بالنشرFrom tawny wine comes fragrance,
- من سره الإحسان منه وساءهWhoever is pleased by kindness from him, and dislikes
- من كابر البرهان في بحثهWhoever obstinately disputes the proof in his inquiry
- من لصب متيم مشتاقWho will aid a lover, love-enslaved and yearning?
- من لم يفارق الكتابWhoever has not parted from the Book,
- من لي بوصل ممنع قطعت يديWho can bring me union with an unapproachable beloved? Severed are the hands
- نظري في الصفاء أشهدني غيMy gaze into the clear surface shows me another than myself—
- نهاية الجهل اجتهاد الفتىThe height of ignorance is a young man's striving
- نهدت إلى الهند في فتيةI set out for India among young men,
- هل لفؤادي يا جيرة الواديIs there for my heart, O neighbors of the valley,
- هم المنى والأملThey are every longing and every hope,
- هم رغبتي فلماذا في قد زهدواThey are my desire—why, then, have they turned away from me?
- وآجيرة جاءت بحسن مبدعAnd Ajirah came with wondrous beauty
- وأحوى قد حوى مهج البراياAnd he who yearned has yearned for the wilderness of the desert,
- واحيرتي عنك إذا لم تزدAlas for my bewilderment away from you, if it does not enrich
- وافى خيالك يا سعادYour phantom came to me, O Suʿad,
- وإني لأستجلي بمرآة خلوتيAnd indeed I behold, in the mirror of my seclusion
- وبدر دجى شعر متى برقت بهAnd a full moon in poetry’s darkness—whenever within him flash
- وجدي بك فقدانيMy ecstasy in you is my loss of self;
- وجه تثليث النصارىThe meaning of the Christians’ Trinity
- وجود بغير ثراء عدمExistence without wealth is nothingness.
- وجود وجدي فيكم لم يزلMy ardor for you has never ceased to exist;
- وجودي فيك مفقودMy existence in you is lost.
- وراي عين أماميBehind me is the very same as before me,
- وساحر زال عقليAnd a sorcerer—my reason vanished
- وسحار الجفون يريك ناراAnd one with bewitching eyelids shows you a fire
- وعذار ثنى عذاAnd cheek-down that turned my bridle
- وعن طرب أصفق إذ تغنيAnd in rapture I clap when you sing
- ولو أن قومي شاهدوا فيك مشهديAnd had my people witnessed in you what I witness,
- ولو لم تبد لي منكAnd had you not appeared to me from yourself,
- ولو لم يعدني طيف لمياء في القلىAnd had Lamya’s apparition not visited me amid estrangement—
- ولولا اغتراري بالأماني لم أر اغAnd had I not been beguiled by hopes, I would not have known ex-
- ولولا لجام الطالبيين في فميAnd were it not for the Talibids’ bridle in my mouth,
- وما زلت أنهى النفس عن طاعة الهوىI never ceased forbidding my soul to obey desire,
- ومدار دارة قطب أرباب الوفاAnd by the circle’s orbit around the pole of fidelity’s masters,
- ومغرب الشمس ومشرق القمرBy the sun's setting and the moon's rising,
- ومقام أرباب الغرام وذلة الشاكيAnd by the station of the masters of passion and the complainant's abasement,
- ومليحة كالشمس رأد الضحىAnd a beauty, like the sun in early forenoon,
- ومهفهف بالفرق منفردAnd a slender youth, set apart by his hair’s parting,
- وهبت اشتهاري في هواك صبابتيI gave my ardent longing my renown in loving you,
- يا بأبي البدر الذيAh, may my father be ransom for the full moon,
- يا حسنا ظاهرهO beauty whose outward form
- يا راغبا بغناه عن فقرائناO one who, in his wealth, turns away from our poor,
- يا راقدا في جهلهO sleeper in his ignorance,
- يا غادرين بمن وفيO you who deserted the faithful one
