إِذاif المَولىthe Lord لِعَبدٍfor a servant صارَbecame سَمعاًhearing
وَعَيناًand an eye فيin الرِضىgood pleasure وَيَداًand a hand وَرِجلاand a foot
If the Lord becomes a servant's hearing,
When my Master becomes for His servant hearing, sight,
and an eye, in His good pleasure, and a hand and a foot,
A hand in prosperity, a foot in difficulties
فَلَمthen why ذاthis فيconcerning الأَحَبِّthe most beloved إِلَيهِto Him يَنفيdenies
مَقالَةَthe claim مَنone who يَقولُsays بِهِthrough him تَجَلّىHe manifested Himself
then why does this deny, concerning the one dearest to Him,
Then why should the report of one who says He has appeared
the claim of one who says, 'Through him He manifested Himself'?
Be unwelcome to me in my love for Him?
وَلَستُand I am not بِذاin this أُدينُI believe وَإِنand though أَدنىthe least
مَقاليmy words فيهِconcerning Him مِنthan ذاthis القَولِstatement أَعلىhigher
And I do not believe in this, though the least
And though I do not share that doctrine, yet my words
of what I say concerning Him is higher than this claim.
Concerning Him are higher than those which assert it.
لِأَنّيbecause I مُذsince تَأَتّىcame about مِنهُfrom Him سَمعيmy hearing
تَجَلّىbeheld عَنهُfrom Him طَرفيmy gaze ماwhat تَجَلّىshone forth
For since my hearing came from Him,
For since my hearing and my sight of Him proceeded
my gaze has beheld what shone forth from Him.
My eyes have never turned from Him when He appeared.
وَهَلand is there? أَقصىa farther reach وَبِالأَقصىand at the farthest رَآهُsaw Him
فُؤاديmy heart بِالدُنُوِّin nearness وَقَدand already تَدَلّىdescended
And is there any farther reach, when at the farthest He was seen
And can the innermost heart of one who has seen Him
by my heart in nearness, as He descended?
Perceive Him with any other approach than humility?
