لَوif كُنتَyou were مِنّيof me ماnot غَبتَyou were absent عَنّيfrom me
وَلاand not تَغَيَّرتَyou changed عَنfrom كَيانيmy being
Had you been of me, you would not have been absent from me,
If you were of me, you would not be absent from me
Nor would you have become different from my being.
Nor would you change from my essence
وَلَمand not أَزَلI cease سامِعاًhearing بَصيراًseeing
أُجيبُI answer بِالنُطقِwith speech مَنwhoever دَعانيcalled me
And I would have continued to hear and see,
I would still be hearing and seeing
Answering in speech whoever called me.
Answering with speech those who call upon me
وَلَمand not أَجِدI find بِالرُقادِin sleep فَقديmy absence
مِنّيfrom myself وَذوand one possessing يَقظَةِwakefulness يَرانيsees me
Nor would I have found in sleep my own absence
I would not find, with slumber, my loss
From myself, while someone awake sees me.
Of me, while the wakeful one sees me
وَلَمand not تَسِرtravel بيwith me نوقُshe-camels المَناياdeaths
عَنaway from رَبعِthe abode سِربيmy flock دونَshort of الأَمانيthe hopes
Nor would the she-camels of death have borne me away
The stars of death would not travel with me
From my flock's abode, leaving hopes unfulfilled.
Beyond the quarter of my encampment, short of wishes
وَكانَand was مَنwhoever راحَset out ليto me مُطيعاًobedient
يَقهَرُsubdues بيthrough me كُلَّevery مَنone who عَصانيdisobeyed me
And whoever set out obedient to me
And whoever went far from me obedient
Would, through me, subdue everyone who disobeyed me.
Would overcome through me all who disobeyed me
بَلrather أَناI مِمَّنfrom the one who إِلَيَّto myself لَمّاwhen
ضَلَلتُI strayed عَنّيfrom myself بِهِthrough him هَدانيhe guided me
Rather, I am of the one who, back to myself—when
Rather, I am of those whom when
I strayed from myself—guided me through him.
I went astray from myself, He guided me
وَلِيُّa guardian فَضلٌa blessing عَلىupon البَراياcreated beings
يَنشُرُنيhe unfolds me كُلَّماwhenever طَوانيhe folded me
A guardian—a blessing upon created beings—
My Lord has bounty over the wilderness
Unfolds me whenever he folds me.
He spreads me out whenever difficulties constrict me
بِهِthrough him أَرانيI see myself كَماjust as أَراهُI see him
فَأَثبَتُso I affirm النَقِيَّthe pure one بِالعَيانِby direct sight
Through him I see myself, just as I see him;
Through Him I see myself as I see Him
Thus I affirm the pure one through direct sight—
So I prove the pure with vision
وَعَنand from حُلولٍindwelling وَعَنand from أُفولٍsetting
وَعَنand from تَناءٍremoteness وَعَنand from تَدانِnearness
Free from indwelling and from setting,
And above descent, setting,
And from remoteness and from nearness.
Thinning out and approaching
