    I am not possessed of rapture if

    I find hurt in love.

    لامِ الهَوى تَلَذُّذا

    The lover is one who grows, through the torment

    of passion, in delight;

    بِحمِلِهِ مُنتَبِذا

    and goes apart from his reproachers,

    with his burden, withdrawing;

    finding all he needs in remembrance of him,

    without drink or nourishment.

    مِ قَد غَدا مُتَّخِذا

    And as a paradise for himself, fasting

    he has come to adopt;

    and when breaking his fast, he outdid

    with his speech those given to obscenity.

    لِشَعبِهِ مُعَمَّذا

    And in the name of his holiness he became

    a baptizer for his people;

    and in the kindling of his fire

    he became a Magian priest for the people.

    And he became an executor of decrees among

    the people of passionate love,

    for, within it, without

    his authority, he carried nothing out.

    And he did not go forth as a teacher

    until he had nourished a pupil.

    هَذيُ مَقالِ مَن هَذا

    He was not turned from his words

    by the babble of one who babbled;

    and his [gaze] was not diverted

    from the vision of the unseen by any mote.

    And since he undertook divestment, in obedience

    to the command from him, he has worn no shoes.

    Oh, how fine his way

    in his passion—oh, how fine!

    O my two companions, to my words

    rather than others', give heed.

    And whatever lies beyond the writing of my book,

    cast away behind you, both of you.

    For no lover is a man

    of ardent longing who is not like this.
