عَلَيَّ بِالمَيلِ قَد تَعَدّى
Your upright figure, for which I would give my life,
Your upright beauty leans to me
has wronged me with its swaying.
Exceeding moderation and equity

And your slender, healthy waist
Your wasp-like waist so lithe and free

Has brought my body health and glee
ياO غُصنَbranch بانٍa bān tree إِذاwhen تَثَنّىit sways

وَبَدرَ تَمٍّ إِذا تَبَدّى
O branch of the bān tree when it sways,
O bough of ban when you incline

And full-moon orb when you shine clear
أَضَلَّنيled me astray الحُبُّlove فيكَfor you حَتّىuntil
أَضَلَّني الحُبُّ فيكَ حَتّى
رَأَيتُI saw فيكَin you الضَلالَmisguidance رَشداright guidance
رَأَيتُ فيكَ الضَلالَ رَشدا
Love for you led me astray, until
Love so misled me unto thee
I saw, in you, misguidance as right guidance.
In you I saw misguidance sheer
