أَبوfather of طالِبٍTalib كَفِلَtook into his care المُصطَفىthe Chosen One
وَجاهَدَand strove عَنهُon his behalf وَجافىand shunned المَجافيthe one who shunned him
Abu Talib took the Chosen One under his care,
Abu Talib was the guardian of Mustafa
And strove on his behalf and shunned whoever shunned him.
He struggled for him and shunned the severers
وَأَنفَقَand spent فيin نَصرِهِsupport of him مالِهِhis wealth
وَأَصفاهُand gave him the purest مِنof وُدِّهِhis affection كُلَّall صافِthat was pure
And spent his wealth in support of him,
He spent his wealth in supporting him
And bestowed on him all his pure affection.
And cleansed his affection for him of all turbidity
وَأَظهَرَand made manifest فيin الشِعرِpoetry تَصديقَهُhis belief in him
وَعَنand from قَولِهِhis word لَمdid not يَمُتdie ذاpossessing اِنحِرافِdeviation
And proclaimed in verse his belief in him,
He proclaimed his belief in him through poetry
And died without departing from his word.
And never deviated from his word
وَذاand this man كافِرٌan unbeliever وَاِبنُand son of حَربٍHarb بِهِthrough him
غَداbecame مُؤمِناًa believer ذاthis عَمىًblindness غَيرُnot خافِhidden
Yet this man is deemed an unbeliever, while Ibn Harb, through him,
An unbeliever and Harb's son thereby
Became a believer—this is blindness plain to see.
Became a blind believer, dreading naught
