قَدindeed كانَthere was ليfor me خِلٌّa dear friend خَلاdeparted بِمَسَرَّتيwith my joy
فَأَقامَتِso dwelt الأَيّامُthe days فيin تَرحالِهِhis departure
I once had a dear friend who departed with my joy;
So the days dwelt in his departure.
وَأَشُدُّand the hardest ماwhat أَلقاهُI endure it بَعدَafter فِراقِهِparting from him
مِنof لَوعَتيmy anguish شَحَّwas stingy الكَرىsleep بِخَيالِهِwith his image
And the hardest thing I endure after parting from him,
Of all my anguish, is that sleep begrudges me his image.
