لاmay not أَوحَشَleave desolate اللَهُGod مِنكَwithout you مَغناناour abode
ياO حُسنَناour beauty فيamong الوَرىhumankind وَمَعناناand our meaning
May God never let our dwelling be desolate without you.
May God never leave our abode desolate without you,
O our beauty among humankind, and our very meaning—
O our beauty among humankind and our meaning,
وَمَنand one who بِأَخلاقِهِin his character وَخِلقَتِهِand his physical form
فاقَsurpassed البَراياall creatures حُسناًin beauty وَإِحساناand kindness
you whose character and created form
And you who, in character and form,
have surpassed all creation in beauty and benevolence;
have surpassed all creatures in beauty and kindness.
وَمَنand one whom بِحُسنِwith fine الوَفاءِloyalty نَذكُرُهُwe remember him
عَلىdespite التَنائيthe distance وَإِنeven if تَناساناyou pretend to forget us
you whom, faithful to love’s claim, we remember
And you whom we remember with true loyalty,
despite the distance, even if you act as though you have forgotten us.
despite the distance, even if you pretend to forget us.
ياO فارِغَempty القَلبِthe heart مِنof هَوايَlove for me لَقَدindeed
أَصبَحَhas become قَلبيmy heart بِالحُزنِwith sorrow مَلآناfull
O you whose heart is empty of love for us—indeed,
O you whose heart is empty of love for me, indeed
my heart has grown full of sorrow.
my heart has become full of sorrow.
سُعِدتُI was happy حيناًfor a time بِالقُربِthrough nearness مِنكَto you وَقَدand indeed
شَقيتُI was wretched بِالبُعدِthrough distance مِنكَfrom you أَحياناat times
For a while I was happy in being near you, yet
For a time I was happy near you, and indeed
at times I was miserable in being far from you.
at times I was wretched far from you.
