I complain to God of the ignorance of a people
I complain to God of the ignorance of a people
who have resented what intellects have approved.
Who are displeased with what intellects find good.
قالواthey said لَناfor us قَولُsaying ماwhatever أَرَدناwe wished
وَماand not لَكُمfor you فيهِconcerning it أَنto تَقولواyou speak
They said, 'It is ours to say whatever we wish,
They said to us, “Say what we want!
and not for you to speak of it.
Who are you to speak?”
وَمَنand who بِحَقَقٍّto truth أَحَقُّmore entitled مِنّاthan us
وَمُدَّاناand our claim (uncertain reading) لَناfor us الدَليلُthe proof
And who is more entitled to truth than we?
And who is more truthful than us
And our claim [reading uncertain] is our proof;
When evidence points our way,
وَفيand in خُطاناour steps لَناfor us ثَوابٌa reward
وَاللَهُand God فيناin us بِناthrough us الفَعولُthe ever-active doer
and in our steps there is reward for us,
And there is reward in our error,
and God is the doer in us, through us.'
Since God will judge us for what we do?
