وَعَنand out of طَرَبِrapture أُصَفِّقُI clap إِذwhen تُغَنّيyou sing
بِأَنِيَof my being مِنكَfrom you حينَwhen دَنَوتَyou drew near مِنّيto me
And in rapture I clap when you sing
I applaud your singing joyfully,
Of my being from you, when you drew near to me.
For it reminds me of your nearness to me,
وَماand not عَنّيfrom me بَعُدتَyou grew distant وَحَقُّand by the truth of قُربيmy nearness
إِلَيكَto you وَماand what الَّذيthat يُبعِدُكَdistances you عَنّيfrom me
Nor have you grown distant from me—by the truth of my nearness
You have not become distant, though closeness is my right,
To you! And what could draw you away from me?
What drives you away from me?
وَمِنand than حَبلِthe cord of الوَريدِthe jugular vein غَدَوتَyou have become أَدنىnearer
إِلىto قَلبيmy heart وَإِنَّكَand indeed you are غَيرُother than إِنّيmy 'I' (selfhood)
And you have become nearer than the jugular vein
You have come closer to my heart than my jugular vein,
To my heart, though you are other than my 'I'.
Yet you are not me.
وَإِنّيand indeed I مُذsince وَجَدتُI found بِكَthrough you الأَمانيthe wishes
عَدِمتُI lost بِهاthrough them مِنَfrom الخَلقِcreated beings التَمَنّيwishing
And since I found my wishes fulfilled through you,
Since finding you, my wishes,
Through them I no longer wish for anything from creation.
I have ceased to wish from people.
وَفيand in ذِكريكَyour two remembrances لَمdid not آنَسI find solace بِذِكريin my remembrance
وَأُنسيand my solace وَحشَةُestrangement العُذّالِthe reproachers مِنّيfrom me
And in your two remembrances I found no solace in my own,
In remembering you I find no solace in remembering myself,
And my solace is the reproachers' estrangement from me.
Only the loneliness of the reproacher comforts me.
وَإِنّيand indeed I مُذsince رَفَضتُI rejected بِكَthrough you اللَواحيthe reproachers
عَلَيكَon your account بِسُنَّةِby the tradition of الأَبدالِthe Abdāl (substitutes) سِنّيSunni (contextual reading)
And I, since through you I rejected those who reproach me
Since rejecting frivolity for your sake,
On your account, am Sunni in the tradition of the Abdāl.
Make me follow the way of the righteous.
وَإِنand if أَخطَأَتُI erred فيin قَوليmy speech وَفِعليand my action
فإِنَّthen indeed إِصابَتيmy being right بِكَthrough you حُسنُthe goodness of ظَنّيmy opinion
And if I have erred in my words and deeds,
If I err in word or deed,
Then what I get right through you is my good opinion of you.
Know that thinking well of you is my success.
