My father be his ransom, the one of upright stature—even if he
O my just and upright beloved, though the days
leans, I shall never turn from his justice.
Have not been just to me, yet his justice lasts forever.

In love, I am rich in
For love of him I've borne much blame,
his cruelty, but poor in his tenderness toward me.
Though little of his favor on me falls.

لي عَلَيهِ إِذ مالَهُ فيهِ قَبلُ
No estrangement from my passion can be sought by those who reproach
Why should my passion now grow cold
me for it, since no reproacher has power over it.
When once toward me his passion rolled?

Others have become engrossed in someone other than him—
With none but him is my heart engaged.
and I have no diversion from him in anyone else.
From others to him my thoughts have turned.

بِوُجودي فَفَرعُهُ لي أَصلُ
In my love for him, my madness and my ecstasy
For him my madness and my sober sense,
arise through my existence; thus his branch is my root.
For he's the branch to which my roots adhere.

وَلِتَفصيلِ جُملَتي فَهوَ كُلُّ
So with whom should I seek distraction from loving him?
With whom then shall I busy my heart
And in the unfolding of my entirety, he is the whole.
When he's my every part's completeness?

Others have inferred him from his radiance;
By his beauty others learned of him,
yet to me, he himself points to the proof.
But he to me's the proof that proves.

My eye appeared as a point in his clarity;
A glint in his eye showed me worlds,
then he showed me a line, and the line has a form.
So I see but a line, and lines take shape.

Not what I saw is he, but rather light
statement spoken of him he is exalted.
Beyond all telling, awe, and sense.
