I deem my wealth and soul too little a ransom

For a full moon whose light the sun has become.

Exalted is he; abasement before him is the honor of souls.

And in him annihilation grants permanence.

And acceptance from him makes bliss endure.

And opposition to him increases misery.

Darkness falls whenever he withdraws from sight,

And daylight is unveiled whenever he appears.

Thus in imagination he draws near to every eye,

Yet eludes the understanding of every heart.

Through him the earth became the heaven of minds,

And in it souls make their way to heaven.

Nor is his nearness measured by spatial

Distance; and whoever dwells in him abides.

And were he not present to sight—

We see him through himself—we would not whisper our supplication.

    I mislead men concerning him,

And I mean the full moon, yet invoke Dhukāʾ, the sun.

And were dissimulation not part of my creed,

I would cast aside piety and lift the veil.
