وَسَحّارِand a bewitcher of الجُفونِeyelids يُريكَhe shows you ناراًa fire
بِأَمواهِwith the waters of البِحارِthe seas تَزيدُit increases وَقداin burning
And one with bewitching eyelids shows you a fire
That burns more fiercely with the waters of the seas;
وَفيand in الظِلِّthe shade الحَرورِscorching heat وَفيand in الفِيافيthe deserts
بِلاwithout ظِلٍّshade لِحَرِّagainst the heat of الشَمسِthe sun بَرداcoolness
And in the shade, scorching heat; and in the deserts,
Without shade, coolness against the sun's heat;
وَكُلُّand the whole of الكُلِّthe whole فيin الأَبعاضِthe parts بَعضاًa part
وَقَبلَand before القَبلِwhat comes before بَعدَafter البُعدِremoteness بُعداremoteness
And the whole of the whole as a part within the parts,
And before the before, remoteness beyond remoteness.
فَأَربابُso the lords of العَلاءِeminence لَهُto him عَبيدٌslaves
وَليand to me وَلَهُand to him غَداhe became مَولىًa master وَعَبداand a slave
So the lords of eminence are his slaves,
And to me and to him, he became master and slave.
وَأَعجَبُand the most wondrous aspect of حالِهِhis state فيin القُربِnearness مِنهُto him
إِلىto رائيهِhis beholder عَنهُfrom him يَزيدُhe increases بُعداin distance
And most wondrous in his state: as one draws near to him,
To his beholder, he grows ever farther away.
فَمِنهُso from him بِالجُنونِthrough madness مُنِحتُI was granted عَقلاًreason
وَفيهِand in him بِالضَلالِthrough error وَجدتُI found رُشداguidance
So from him, through madness, I was granted reason,
And in him, through error, I found guidance.
لِذاكَfor that reason حِماهُhis sanctuary غَدَتbecame سَبيليmy path
سَبيلاًa path مَنwhoever تَعَدّاهاgoes beyond it تَعَدّاtransgresses
Thus his sanctuary became my path,
A path: whoever goes beyond it transgresses.
لِأَنَّbecause وَلِيَّthe guardian of أَمريmy affairs فيin زَمانيmy time
عَلىagainst أَهلِthe people of التَحَدّيchallenge قَدindeed تَحَدّاhe has challenged
For the guardian of my affairs in my time
Has indeed challenged those who challenge.
فَمَوعودُso what is promised of المُنىwishes مِنهُfrom him لِغَيريfor others than me
بِحالِin the state of الوَقتِthe present moment ليfor me قَدalready صارَhas become نَقداready cash
So the hopes he promises to fulfill for others
Have, in the present moment, already become ready cash for me.
