سُفَهاءَthe fools قَوميmy people فيin المَحَبَّةِlove سَفَّهواthey deemed foolish
رَأييmy judgment وِبِالتَمويهِand with deceit عَنّيabout me مَوَّهواthey misrepresented
The fools of my people, in matters of love, deemed foolish
My people were foolish in love, they acted foolishly
my judgment, and with deceit misrepresented me.
They obscured my opinion and cloaked it
وَتَحامَلواand they assailed حَسَداًout of envy عَلَيَّagainst me وَدَنَّسواand they sullied
عَرَضيmy honor بِزَورِwith falsehood القَولِspeech وَهوَand it مُنَزَّهُuntainted
And out of envy they assailed me and sullied
They were unjustly envious of me and defiled
my honor with false speech, though it is untainted.
My honor with false words though it is pure
وَتَواجَدواand they feigned ecstasy مِنfrom غَيرِother than وَجدٍecstasy وَاِدَّعواand they claimed
أَنّيthat I دَعِيَّa pretender فيin الهَوىlove مُتَشَبِّهُan imitator
And they feigned ecstasy without experiencing it, and claimed
They congregated without purpose and falsely claimed
that I am a pretender in love, an imitator.
That I am a pretender in love, pretending
وَبِدونِand without مَعرِفَتيknowledge of me العِداةَthe foes تَنَبَّأواthey claimed prophethood
جَهلاًin ignorance وَلَوand if فازواthey succeeded بِهاwith it لَتَأَلَّهواthey would have claimed divinity
And without knowing me, the foes claimed prophethood
And without knowing me the enemies prophesied
in ignorance; had they attained that knowledge, they would have claimed divinity.
In ignorance, and had they succeeded they would have been deified
وَلَهوand they dallied بِلَهوِwith idle amusement القَولِspeech عَنaway from جِدٍّearnestness إِلىtoward
جَدٍّfortune وَفيand in تيهِthe wilderness of الضَلالِerror تَوَلَّهواthey became bewildered
And they dallied with idle speech, leaving earnestness for
And they raved from sincerity to
fortune, and grew bewildered in the wilderness of error.
Sincerity, lost in the wilderness of error
وَلَوand if اِنَّهُمthat they آوواthey took refuge إِلىin كَهفيmy cave الَّذيwhich
أَناI راقِدٌasleep فيهِin it عَلَيَّof me تَنَبَّهواthey became aware
And had they taken refuge in my cave, where
If only they had come to my cave in which
I lie asleep, they would have awakened to my presence.
I lie, they would have been awakened to me
