حَثَّsped on الرِكابُthe riding camels بِناwith us وَالقَومُwhile the people قَدalready وَقَفواthey had stopped
حَثَّ الرِكابُ بِنا وَالقَومُ قَد وَقَفوا
دونَshort of الحِمىthe sanctuary وَعَلىand at ضالِwild lote trees الغَضاal-Ghada عَكَفواthey lingered devotedly
دونَ الحِمى وَعَلى ضالِ الغَضا عَكَفوا
The mounts sped on with us, while the people had stopped
Short of the sanctuary, clinging to the wild lote trees of al-Ghada.
ظَنّواthey thought سَرابَthe mirage of الفَلاthe desert ماءًwater فَمالَso it veered بِهِمwith them
ظَنّوا سَرابَ الفَلا ماءً فَمالَ بِهِم
عَنaway from مَورِدِthe watering place of الرَيِّquenched thirst فيin الوَعساءِthe soft sand فَاِعتَسَفواso they wandered blindly
عَن مَورِدِ الرَيِّ في الوَعساءِ فَاِعتَسَفوا
They mistook the desert's mirage for water, and it led them away
From the thirst-quenching watering place; in soft sands they wandered blindly.
وَأَوهَمواand they deluded الناسَthe people رُشداًright guidance فيin الضَلالِerror فَكَمand how many
وَأَوهَموا الناسَ رُشداً في الضَلالِ فَكَم
وَجهٍa face إِلىtoward الغَيِّwaywardness عَنaway from نَهجِthe path of الهُدىguidance صَرَفواthey turned aside
وَجهٍ إِلى الغَيِّ عَن نَهجِ الهُدى صَرَفوا
They made people see guidance in error—how many
Faces they turned from guidance's path toward waywardness!
قالواthey spoke فَمانواand they lied فَلَمّاthen when أَنَّهُمthat they نُدِبواthey were summoned
قالوا فَمانوا فَلَمّا أَنَّهُم نُدِبوا
إِلىto القِياسِanalogical reasoning أَبانواthey revealed العَجزَincapacity وَاِعتَرَفواand they admitted it
إِلى القِياسِ أَبانوا العَجزَ وَاِعتَرَفوا
They spoke and lied; then, when they were summoned
To reason by analogy, they revealed their incapacity and admitted it.
تَواجَدواthey feigned ecstasy فيin هَواlove for لَيلىLayla وَماyet not وَجَدواthey experienced
تَواجَدوا في هَوا لَيلى وَما وَجَدوا
وَجديmy ecstasy وَلاnor كَلَفيmy consuming passion فيin حُبِّهاlove for her كَلِفواthey burned with passion
وَجدي وَلا كَلَفي في حُبِّها كَلِفوا
They feigned ecstasy in love for Layla, yet never felt
My ecstasy, nor burned for her with my consuming passion.
وَعَيَّرونيand they taunted me بِذُلّيfor my abasement فيin مَحَبَّتِهاloving her
وَعَيَّروني بِذُلّي في مَحَبَّتِها
وَبِالَّذيand through what عَيَّرونيthey taunted me for تَمَّbecame complete ليfor me الشَرَفُhonor
وَبِالَّذي عَيَّروني تَمَّ لي الشَرَفُ
And they taunted me for my abasement in loving her;
Yet what they taunted me for perfected my honor.
هامواthey were enamored بِأَوصافِهاof her attributes بِالغَيبِwithout seeing her وَاِطَّرَحواand they cast aside
هاموا بِأَوصافِها بِالغَيبِ وَاِطَّرَحوا
عِندَupon الشَهادَةِdirect witnessing مِعناهاher essence الَّذيwhich وَصَفواthey had described
عِندَ الشَهادَةِ مِعناها الَّذي وَصَفوا
They were enamored of her attributes, sight unseen, yet cast aside
Upon beholding her, the very essence they had described.
وَبِاللِوىand at al-Liwa عَرَفوهاthey recognized her وَهيَwhile she سافِرَةٌunveiled
وَبِاللِوى عَرَفوها وَهيَ سافِرَةٌ
وَأَنكَرواand they denied بِالمُصَلّىat the prayer ground عَينُthe very thing ماthat عَرَفواthey had recognized
وَأَنكَروا بِالمُصَلّى عَينُ ما عَرَفوا
And at al-Liwa they recognized her, unveiled,
Yet at the prayer ground denied the very thing they had recognized.
