مِنof نِكاحٍmarriage وَمَطعَمٍand food وَشَرابِand drink
A young man's asceticism does not lie in forbidding what is lawful,
The youth's asceticism is not in prohibiting
Such as marriage, food, and drink,
Marriage, food and drink for himself,
وَاِرتِباطٍand attachment بِالرُبطِto the religious lodges أَوor بِاِعتِزالٍby seclusion
فيin جِبالٍmountains وَلاand not بِرَقعِby patching ثِيابِgarments
Nor in attachment to religious lodges, or seclusion
Nor in binding himself with ropes or living
In mountains, nor in patching garments,
In mountains or wearing ragged clothes;
بَلrather بِقَصدٍthrough moderation فيماin what أُحِلَّwas made lawful وَزُهدٍand abstinence

But in moderation in what is permitted, and abstinence
But in intending what is lawful and eschewing
From what is forbidden, and longing for reward.
The unlawful, and in longing for reward.
