وَيَسوءُهُ مِمَّن تَهاواهُ الأَذى
Aversion turns another from his pledge,
Another changes him from the ancient pact
and hurt from the one he loves grieves him.
And harms him, though harm to him was forbidden
وَأَناand I الَّذيthe one who فيin الحُبِّlove أُمسيI pass the evening بِالشَقاin misery
وَأَنا الَّذي في الحُبِّ أُمسي بِالشَقا
مُتَنَعِّماًenjoying bliss وَبِنارِهِand in its fire مُتَلَذِّذاtaking delight
مُتَنَعِّماً وَبِنارِهِ مُتَلَذِّذا
Yet I am he who, in love, passes the evening in misery,
While I who in love am made most hapless
reveling in it and delighting in love's fire.
Delight in it, made joyous by its fire

وَأَغُضُّ أَجفاني عَلى جَمرِ القَذى
In my love, I fold my ribs around hurt,
I fold my wings through love though harm await
and lower my eyelids over the embers of grit.
And close my eyes to burning embers' sparks

And I seek love's protection for myself, lest I be seen
And by love guard myself lest I should see
seeking refuge from the tyranny of love's rulers.
From tyrants of love's rule myself guarding
