أَناI بِالمَوتِthrough death عِشتُI lived فيamong الأَحياءِthe living
ناعِمَblissful العَيشِlife فيin الهَوىlove بِشَقائيthrough my suffering
Through death I lived among the living,
In life with death I lived among the living,
living blissfully in love through my suffering.
Luxuriously indulging in passionate love through my misery,
وَلَهُand to him بِالبَراءِthrough disavowal مِنof عُذَّليthose who reproach me فيهِconcerning him
لَدَيهِin his presence قَدindeed صَحَّhas proved sound عَقدُthe covenant وَلائيmy allegiance
And to him, by renouncing those who reproach me for him,
And due to his being innocent of reproaching me for it,
my covenant of allegiance has proved true before him.
My allegiance has been firmly bound to him.
أَيُّwhat وَجدٍecstasy بَينَamong الوَرىhumankind مِثلُlike وَجديmy ecstasy
بِفَنائيthrough my annihilation وَجَدتُI found فيهِin him بَقائيmy enduring existence
What ecstasy among humankind is like my ecstasy?
What passion is there in the world like my passion?
Through my annihilation I found in him my enduring existence.
Through my demise in it I found my survival,
وَبِذُلّيand through my abasement لَدَيهِbefore him لاقَيتُI encountered عِزّيmy honor
وَبِفَقريand through my poverty إِلَيهِtoward him نِلتُI attained غَنائيmy wealth
And through my abasement before him I found my honor,
And by dedicating myself to him I attained my honour,
and through my need of him I attained my wealth.
And through my poverty unto him I gained my wealth.
فَهوَso he ليfor me صاحِبٌa companion إِذاwhen أَناI سافَرتُI travel
وَفيand among الأَهلِthe family أَرأَفُthe most compassionate الحُلَفاءِthe allies
So he is my companion when I travel,
So he is my companion whenever I travel
and among my family, the most compassionate of allies.
And the most compassionate of intimates.
جامِعٌuniting لِلنَقيضِof opposites فِيَّwithin me عَلَيهِfor him
دونَrather than قَوميmy people جَعَلتُI made وَقفاًan endowment هَوائيmy love
He unites opposites within me; for him
He unites opposites in me, upon him
rather than for my people, I have made my love an endowment.
I made my very passions subservient instead of my people.
وَلَهُand to him belongs ماthat which بِهِthrough it وَجَدتُI found وُجوديmy existence
قَبلَbefore كَونيmy coming into being وَشِدَّتيand my hardship وَرَخائيand my ease
And his is that through which I found my existence,
And by him I found my existence,
before my coming into being, my hardship, and my ease.
Before my being, firmness, and tranquility.
