لَوif لَمnot يَكُنbe ناظِرُهُhis eye ساحِراًa sorcerer
لَمnot يَبدُappear فيin خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks ماءٌwater وَنارand fire
Had his eye not been a sorcerer,
If his gaze was not magical
water and fire would not have appeared in his cheeks.
No water or fire would show on his cheeks
وَلاnor أَراناshowed us فيin الدُجىthe darkness كَأَسَهُhis cup
بَدرُthe full moon الدُجىof darkness قَدalready حازَcaptured شَمسَthe sun النَهارof daytime
Nor would he have shown us his cup in the darkness—
Nor would he show us at night his cup
the full moon of night, who had captured the sun of day.
The full moon of the night has gained the sun of day

A slender-waisted one—the clipping of my wing for him
My wings long to flutter for him
grounded my body and sent my heart flying.
My body sits still while my heart takes flight
