قَدindeed بَراهُwore him away الأَسىsorrow وَعَزَّand became scarce الراقيthe healer using charms
قَد بَراهُ الأَسى وَعَزَّ الراقي
Who will aid a lover, love-enslaved and yearning?
Who will aid a lovesick man, enthralled and yearning,
Sorrow has worn him away, and scarce is the healer who recites charms.
whom sorrow has worn away, with a healer hard to find?
وَلِجِسمٍand for a body أَذابَهُmelted it رائِدُthe scout of الحُسنِbeauty
وَلِجِسمٍ أَذابَهُ رائِدُ الحُسنِ
وَأَخنىand wrought destruction عَلَيهِupon it طولُthe length of الفِراقِseparation
وَأَخنى عَلَيهِ طولُ الفِراقِ
And who will aid a body that beauty’s herald has melted away,
And a body that beauty’s scout has melted,
and that long separation has laid waste?
and that long separation has ravaged?

مِنهُ يَخفى عَلى الإِطلاقِ
Were it not for his moaning, the wasting of the body would almost make
Were it not for his groaning—so wasted is his body—
him vanish from sight altogether.
it would almost vanish altogether.

I marvel at him: though he is the substance underlying the accidents
I marvel at it: though it is the substance underlying the symptoms
of my sickness, he perishes, while what inheres in him endures.
of my sickness, it perishes while what is within it endures.
