وافىcame خَيالُكَyour phantom ياO سَعادSu'ad
وَهناًlate at night وَقَدand already غَفِلَdozed السُهّادthe wakeful
Your phantom came to me, O Suʿad,
Your phantom came, O Su'ad,
late at night, when even the sleepless had dozed.
late at night, when the wakeful had dozed.
وَسَخاand was generous بِطَيفِكَwith your phantom بِعَدماafter
ضَنَّwithheld الزَمانُtime بِكَwith you الرُقادsleep
Sleep bestowed your apparition generously, after
And generous with your phantom—after
time had begrudged me you.
time had withheld you from me—was sleep.
حَيّاgreeted فَأَحياand so revived لَوعَةًburning anguish
قَدalready كانَhad أَلحَدَهاburied it الفُؤادthe heart
It greeted me, and so revived an anguish
It greeted me, reviving a burning anguish
the heart had once entombed.
that the heart had buried.
وَأَجَدَّand renewed فيin جَسَديmy body ضَنّاًwasting illness (likely ضَنًى)
قَدalready كانَhad أَخلَقَهُworn it threadbare البِعادseparation
It renewed within my body a wasting sickness
And renewed in my body a wasting sickness
that separation had already worn threadbare.
that separation had worn threadbare.
وَسَرىand journeyed by night وَقَلبيand my heart فيin حَباsnares (first fragment of حَباثِل)
ثَلِsnares (final fragment of حَباثِل) أَسرِهِits captivity عَنقاًat a swift pace يَقادis led
It journeyed by night, while my heart, in the snares
And it journeyed by night, my heart in the snares
of its captivity, was led along by the neck.
of its captivity, led along apace.
أَغراهُenticed it فيtoward تَلَفيmy ruin بِأَنَّwith the thought that
قَتيلَone slain حُبِّكَyour love لاnot يُقادis avenged
It was emboldened to destroy me by the knowledge that
It lured my heart toward my ruin with the thought that
no blood-requital is exacted for one slain by your love.
one slain by your love goes unavenged.
واهاًAh! لِأَيّامٍfor days مَضَتhave passed
لَوif only أَنَّthat فائِتَهاwhat is gone of them يُعادis restored
Alas for days gone by—
Ah, for days gone by—
if only what is lost of them could be restored—
if only what is gone of them could be restored!
وَلِعيشَةٍand for a life سَلَفتwent by لَناfor us
لَوif only لَمdid not يُعاجِلهاcut it short النِقادthe faultfinders
and for a life once ours,
And for a life that once was ours—
if only its ending had not overtaken it so soon.
if only the faultfinders had not cut it short!
