لَمّاwhen مَرَرتُI passed بِتُربَةٍby a patch of earth مَرَّتshe passed بِهاover it
لَيلىLayla وَلاحَتand appeared دونَهاbefore her الأَعلامُthe landmarks
When I passed by a patch of earth once crossed by
Layla, and the landmarks appeared before her,
فَذَكَرتُthen I recalled مَوقِفَهاher standing-place وَليand for me وَلِعُذَّليand for my reproachers
فيهاconcerning her بِأَطرافِwith the points of الرِماحِthe spears خِصامُa quarrel
then I recalled where she stood; my reproachers and I
had a quarrel over her, fought with spearpoints.
وَجَلاand unveiled عَلَيَّto me الفِكرُthought صورَةَthe image of حُسنِهاher beauty
مَعنىًa meaning تَداخَلَنيpervaded me لَهُfor it الإِعظامُreverence
And thought unveiled to me the image of her beauty,
as a meaning that filled me with reverence.
وَلِغَيبَتيand because of my absence بيthrough myself عَنfrom عَيانِdirect sight of شَهيدَتيmy witness
أَشكوI lament النَوىseparation وَلَهاand for her الفُؤادُthe heart مَقامُa dwelling
And since my own self keeps me from beholding my witness,
I lament separation, though my heart is her dwelling.
وَلَطالَماand how often عَنهاaway from her طَوىfolded away نَظَريmy gaze الكَرىslumber
وَبِطَيفِهاand with her phantom نَشَرَتنيrevived me الأَحلامُthe dreams
And how often slumber folded my gaze away from her,
and dreams revived me with her phantom.
وَلَكُمand many a حَديثِtale قَديمِancient عَهدٍbond ليmine بِهاwith her
تَبلىwear away وَلاand not يَبلىit wears away بِهاwith them الأَيّامُthe days
And many a tale of an ancient bond with her is mine:
the days wear away, yet the tale does not wear away with them.
