وَالنوقُand the she-camels قَدhad شَطَّتgone far بِناwith us عِنfrom ضالِهِits wild lote trees
When my companions turned away from me toward the sanctuary,
When my friends departed from me towards the ruins,
And the she-camels had carried us far from its wild lote trees,
And the camel litters had borne us far from our route,
وَبَقيتُand I remained بَعدَهُمafter them وَحيداًalone فيin الفَلاthe wilderness
مِمَّنfrom anyone who يُساعِدُنيhelps me عَلىagainst أَهوالِهِits terrors
And I remained after them, alone in the wilderness,
I remained alone after them in the empty wilderness,
Cut off from anyone who might help me face its terrors,
With none to aid me against its terrors.
قَطَّرتُI distilled إِثرَهُمin their wake دُموعاًtears صَعِّدَتwere drawn upward
مِنfrom مُهجَتيmy lifeblood بِلَهيبِby the flame of قَلبٍa heart والِهِlove-stricken
I distilled tears in their wake, drawn upward
I shed copious tears that arose
From my lifeblood by the flame of a love-stricken heart.
From my burning heart in grief after them.
آلَتswore مَسَرَّتُهُits joy غَداةَon the morning of رَحيلِهِمtheir departure
أَلّاnot to تَؤولَreturn إِلَيهِto it دونَbefore مَآلِهِits return
Its joy swore, on the morning of their departure,
I wished the morning after they left
Not to return to it before that heart's own return.
That it would not end except in reunion with them.
