I and all humankind would be alike in the name of love,

had I not gained my direct vision from its very essence.

And through the dot of the [two letters?], from the action of its name,

in beauty I attained its [luminous?] being.

And I learned the interpretation of the letters and their pronunciation in

    Arabic, Hebrew, and Syriac.

And I mastered revelation and interpretation in the

Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur'an.

And I read the writing on the pages of the good and the

righteous and the wicked in my register.

And I knew my beginning, the return, and my death—the

first—and those whom a second death annihilated.

And I crossed over the Path, in submission,

because the greater weight had become apparent in my scales.

And for my love of beautiful patience, I renounced the

gardens when I desired the fires.

So their peace made them cool for me again,

    in dissolving their bodily composition.

So I remained like a ruby, fearing in them no

accident that might alter the substance of my soul.

Beholding their master, I enjoy bliss forever,

in what increases my contentment through nearness to him.
