وَلَو لَم يَعُدني طَيفُ لَمياءَ في القِلى

وَأَلطافُها عِندَ المُحِبّينَ لا تُحصى

وَأَلطافُها عِندَ المُحِبّينَ لا تُحصى

And had Lamya’s apparition not visited me amid estrangement—

And if the ghost of Layla did not return to me in dreams

And her kindnesses to lovers are beyond counting—

And her delicate graces with lovers cannot be counted

لَمّا هَدَيتُ نَفسي إِلَيها وَلا سَرَت

لَمّا هَدَيتُ نَفسي إِلَيها وَلا سَرَت

مِنَ المَسجِدِ الأَدنى إِلى المسجِدِ الأَقصى

مِنَ المَسجِدِ الأَدنى إِلى المسجِدِ الأَقصى

I would not have guided my soul to her, nor would it have journeyed

I would not have guided my soul to her, nor traveled
