مَتىwhen كانَwas لِلصَبِّfor the lovesick one فيin مَذهَبِthe creed of الهَوىlove
مَتى كانَ لِلصَبِّ في مَذهَبِ الهَوى
حَظُّa share نَفسٍof oneself فَماthen not ذاكَthat one صَبُّa lovesick lover
حَظُّ نَفسٍ فَما ذاكَ صَبُّ
When has the lovesick one, in love’s creed,
had a share for himself? If he has, he is no lovesick one.
وَلَيسَand there is not مِنَof الحُبِّlove فيin عِدَّةِthe number of المُحِبّينَthe lovers
وَلَيسَ مِنَ الحُبِّ في عِدَّةِ المُحِبّينَ
قَلبٌa heart لَهُthat has فيهِwithin it قَلبُa heart
قَلبٌ لَهُ فيهِ قَلبُ
And among those counted as lovers, in love,
there is no heart that still has a heart within it.
