After Najd, would I settle for al-Ghawr, the lowlands, and turn from
Beyond Najd do I yearn for the valleys, though
its heights to seek other landmarks?
I shun the landmarks my people frequent.

Haunts with which death's vicissitudes have made a pact,
A refuge where the misfortunes of fate are barred
and none has visited them but one in pain.
And nothing grieves the heart but sorrow's lament.

إِلّا اِنتَهَت مُدَّتُهُ بِمَأتَمِ
No newcomer's joy was ever complete there,
No joy in it lasts for the newcomer, save
without its span ending in a mourning gathering.
It ends with the mourning women's bereavement.
وَلَمand did not يَبِتspend the night فيهاin them نَديماًa boon companion لِلهوىto passion

صَبٌّ وَأَضحى وَهوَ غَيرُ نادِمِ
Nor did anyone spend the night there as passion's boon companion,
No reveller in it spends the night in pleasure
lovesick, and reach the morning without regret.
Drinking away, yet wakes with no repentance.
