لاno وَلاloyalty (poetic shortening of ولاء) فيin الهَوىlove يَصِحُّis sound لِمَنfor one who لاdoes not
لا وَلا في الهَوى يَصِحُّ لِمَن لا
يَتَبَرّاdisavows مِنfrom سائِرِall العُذّالِthe reproachers
يَتَبَرّا مِن سائِرِ العُذّالِ
No loyalty in love is sound for one who does not
No, nor in passion's realm can he succeed
Disavow all the reproachers.
Who shuns all other loves, whate'er his need.
وَأَشَدُّand the most extreme العُشّاقِthe lovers كُفراًin faithlessness فَتىًa youth ساbegins سالم: made peace with
وَأَشَدُّ العُشّاقِ كُفراً فَتىً سا
لِمَcompletes سالم: made peace with مَنone who عَهunclear; possibly عن, 'away from' هَواهُhis love أَصبَحَhas become ساليforgetful of love
لِمَ مَن عَه هَواهُ أَصبَحَ سالي
And the most faithless of lovers is a youth who made—
The boldest lover, holding faith most rare
—peace with one who has grown forgetful of his love [reading the unclear عه as عن].
Is he, who sets his heart on one most fair.
