If the reproachers, O Har, could see

the beauty of the one I love, they would be bewildered.

And for my lovesick frenzy I would have

excuses in love, in their eyes.

They taunted me for love, yet upon

whoever sees shame in love rests the shame.

And they claimed union, though far away

    from them lay Sulayma's dwelling.

They denied her when she appeared, yet around

her apparition, when she vanished, they circled.

    لَيسَ لي بِالعَذلِ إيثارُ

    O my reproacher, cease reproaching me;

I have no liking for reproach.

For to listen, after I have recognized

the reproachers' folly, would be denial.

No, by beauty's light, it has never gone out—

the fire of love within my heart—

whether the faultfinders blamed or excused me,

whether the judges ruled justly or unjustly.
