لَواشٍ وَلا عاصٍ لِما أَمَرَ الحُبُّ
Patiently bearing passion’s burdens, never turning
Bearing the burdens of passion though not inclined,
To a talebearer, nor disobeying what love commands;
Neither disobedient nor unyielding to love's command,

Yearning for Najd, along the outskirts of ʿĀlij,
Yearning for Nejd with its healing airs,
He struggles with ailments for which a physician is hard to find.
That cure a malady beyond medicine's reach.

The hands of longing and sorrow toss him about
The hands of youth and sorrow turn him over
In the dwelling of a people among whom he has no heart.
In a tribe's abode, who have no heart for him.
