بمثل بلائي أو بمثل بلابلي
With affliction like mine or with misfortune like my misfortune
لو كان صبغي سواد الشعر لم يحل
If my complexion were the blackness of hair, it would not be seemly
أيا دمع هل للحزن عندك مطمع
O tear, does sorrow have any hope in you?
لا يتلافى المشفي على عطبه
The wounded knight does not conceal his wound
مرحبا وأهلا وسهلا
Welcome, welcome, with ease
يا عين والعاشقون قد عشقوا
O eye, though lovers fell in love
كسا الروض آثار الديار النواحل
The meadow wore the traces of the abandoned abodes
ألا من لقلب بالحياة يعذب
Alas! Who suffers a heart tortured by life,
يا هل ترى زمن القرينة يرجع
Oh would the time of companionship return
سقى دار ليلى كل ممسى ومصبح
He watered the abode of Layla every evening and morning
لا ماء عندي لها ولا عشبا
I have no water for her, nor grass
لا فراغ الا من الأشغال
There is no rest but from toil,
لله در فوارس أغمار
For God has valiant horsemen like surging floods,
ظفرنا من عداتك بالخداع
We gained victory over your enemies through deception,
من عذيري من القوي الضعيف
My excuse, from the strong against the weak,
لمن ظعن سوائر كالحراج
For whom are flowing robes like silk curtains,
ولما استقلت للرواح حمولهم
When their weary burdens were lifted
تأمل أيها الطرف المعار
Observe, O glancing eye, am I living in your eyelids or a picture?
دع بين أثوابي وبين وسادي
Let a phantom remain between my clothes and pillow
يا من ترى كل فوق عينه دونا
O You who sees everyone beneath His gaze
سوى حرتي ما هيجتها الحمائم
Except for my freedom, the doves did not stir it,
عوجوا عليها أيها الركب
Turn your mount toward it, O caravan,
أقم في القول من نفسي دليلا
Establish truth from my soul as proof,
ألا ان وصل الغانيات غرور
The flatterers' union is all but illusion
اذا كان عن فرط الملال التفرق
If separation is due to boredom with routine
تعجب من إيماضنا بالمناسم
He was astonished at our fleeting smiles,
نشدتك بالود الذي كان بيننا
I yearned for the affection that was between us
سقى الله أيام الصبابة والخبل
God watered the days of my youth and folly
أغباوة بالعرب والعجم
Ignorance among Arabs and non-Arabs alike,
تؤمل بالأشعار أن تتمولا
You hope that poetry will make you wealthy,
يا دهر مالك لا تثني يد النوب
O Time, be not harsh on a man in grief,
أذم الزمان إلى حامديه
I blame the times for those who disparage me
سقيت ديارك يا ابنة الأقوام
Your abodes have been watered, O daughter of the nations
أي عذر للدهر أني معنى
What excuse is there for time that I am troubled
لقد نطقت بالوجد منك مدامع
Tears of passion have spoken from you,
لمن بقايا طلل ماثل
For the ruins' remnants appearing
إذا لم ترعني الحادثات فطالما
If disasters did not keep me preoccupied,
خليلي لا تستعجلا ودعاني
My beloved, do not hurry me, let me be
لو لي على الأيام ناصر
Had I an ally against the days
لا أسأل الربع وأطلاله
I do not ask of the ruins or their quarter
متى أرجو مسالمة الهموم
When will I hope for peace from worries,
دعوا شبحي في الحب يخفى ويظهر
Let my specter in love hide and appear
عاين حبا كالحراج نعمه
He saw a love like the thrill of the forest,
عسى ممسك الريح القبول يعيدها
May he who holds the wind accept its return,
وما شك ذو بصر اذ طلعت
None who sees clearly doubts, when you appear
تخالف حيا وائل فتهدما
Opposing lives of Wael caused them to crumble
ركبنا إليها السيل في الليل مقبلا
We rode the floods to her that night, advancing
هل لك فيه يا ابن حمد كما
Do you have, O son of Hamad, as you like
مالي أخوف محتوم المقادير
I do not fear what is destined
لكل محب في الزمان حبيب
For every lover there is a beloved in time
سقى رصد الاشراط ساكن حفرة
The watcher of fate waters a grave's pit
ستعلم أي الغايتين أريد
You will learn which of the two aims I want,
قليل بيننا رجع العتاب
Little reproach between us, that's how my days and nights go by
وجلال تاج الملة المنان
By the glory of the crown of the gracious nation,
بنفسي من أسميها بستي
With my soul I call her my Sitti
قسما لقد نشر الحيا
I swear the life has spread
جرت لك بالذي تهوى السعود
Good fortune came your way, as you wished
قيل كل القلوب من
My heart fluttered not
أقول لمعشر جلدوا ولاطوا
I say to a group who endured and mixed
ألا فاسقنى من خمرة لذ طعمها
Where I once drank wine sweet to the taste
في خده وجنونه
In his cheek and his madness
سقام ما يصاب له طبيب
An illness with no cure for its healer,
حويت ريقا نباتيا حلا فغدا
I sipped sweet herbal nectar, and so
أحن الى العلياء في طلب الحمد
I yearn for the exalted in seeking praise,
أيا ابن عمير أنت أول ماجد
O son of Umayr, you are the first glorious one
وقالع من جنتي خده
With cheeks whose softness put to shame the down
أأغلب هذا الدهر أم هو غالبي
Shall I overcome this life or will it overcome me,
تلوم وأي فتى لم يلم
You blame, but what young man is not blamed?
يا سائق الاظعان أين تسوق
O driver of lamentation, where are you leading?
لم يزل جوده يجور على المال
His generosity still flows abundantly
لي من نصيب هواك سهم وافر
I have abundant fortune from your love
يا مصون الدموع في الآفاق
O you who guards tears in horizons
لما وقفنا للوداع وصارما
When we stood to say farewell, with such resolve—
سريت على ظهر الأقب مشمرا
I strode upon the back of darkness, prepared,
سقى الله الجزيرة من بلاد
God watered the peninsula from the lands,
هل رقية يستقيل الحب راقيها
Can solace make passionate love forsake its ardour
كفى حزنا يا ابن المسيب أنني
Enough sorrow, O son of al-Musayyab, that I
يا ليت شعري والعيش أطوار
Oh how I wish my poetry and life were phases,
أما ترى الليل قد ولت غياهبه
Don't you see the night has rolled away its shadows
كيف السبيل إلى الغنى
How to attain wealth when stinginess is the people's wisdom?
أتخشى بنو حمدان ميلي عليهم
Do the Bani Hamdan fear my inclination towards them,
ولما نزلنا منزلا طله الندى
When we alighted at a halt where dew had fallen
وحول نقا سوالفه عذار
And around his conversations reproach
يا كؤوس المدام أنت حرام
O goblets of wine, you are forbidden fruit
على الجذع موف لا يزال كأنه
On a stump remains standing as if
عد خده منع الرقيب
His cheek kept hidden from me, after him came his excuses
تضاءل الدهر حتى ضاع في هممى
Time diminished until it was lost in my concerns,
تقول إن كلامي غير منتحل
You say my words are not plagiarized
إذا سمعت حديثا عنك أحسبه
If I hear a tale of you, my heart pounds
لو جمعت نوب الزما
If all the sins of time
أأعذر قومي والرماح تلوم
Shall I excuse my people, though spears blame them
تمنى رافع بالغيب مدحي
A man of great ambition wished for my praise
ألم يأت أملاك الطوائف أنه
Did not the angels of the Holy Places know
عمرت الشمس والبدر
The sun and moon obeyed you eternally
رأيت كريما مفردا فنصرته
You saw a generous man alone, so you supported him
لدهرك منك أيام طوال
For your fate, you have long days from it
عرج على حرم المحبوب منتصبا
Lean towards the sanctuary of the beloved erect
إذا كنت لم تشهد مكارم صاعد
If you have not witnessed the virtues of Saad ascending
كان فينا طيف الخالي طموعا
The phantom of dawn was among us as aspirations
نال من الحسن ما تخيره
He attained of beauty what he chose
يا منزل الحي بسقط اللوى
O dweller of the abode of life when the twisted branches are cast down,
وغادة تصحب المنايا
With a beauty accompanied are calamities
سقيا لدهري اذا غص واذ
When life seems bitter, full of tears
سأحمل الشمس المنيرة والضحى
I will load the radiant sun, the bright dawn,
شفاء النفس أن ترد الغمارا
The soul finds healing when the clouds clear,
وافى الى وكأس الراح في يده
He came with a cup of wine in his hand,
رضاك ألذ من طعم الوصال
Your pleasure is sweeter than the taste of reunion
ألا يا أيها الملك الرؤوف
O King, the merciful one
يا عيشنا والعيش أنت وإنما
O our life, and life is but you, though
كل يقول إلى العلا أنا صاب
Everyone claims, "To glory I ascend!"
بقيت ولا كان الزمان ولا بقى
You remained, while time itself expired and ended;
نلت صعب الامور بالميسور
You have attained the difficult matters with ease,
أبو شجاع طامع في المقام
Abu Shuja' yearns for glory,
يشاورني في عطفه الغزو باسل
Basil consults me about attacking with his army
لم يبق بين الخافقين أديب
Among the horizons there remained no man of letters
احدى دواهيها الكبر
One of the remedies of old age
ما لابنة السعدي ما تسلى
What ails the daughter of Sa'd, that she finds no solace?
يجر الصبا قلبى اذا جرت الصبا
The breeze draws my heart when the breeze blows,
يا عاتبا وعتابه افراق
O you who reproach me, and your reproach is separation
يا صبغ رأسي والألى رحلوا
O you who dyed my head white and departed,
وثبت الملال فلم أجلس
Weariness prevailed, so I did not sit,
مالها اليوم بالمضيعة راع
Why is there no shepherd at the pasture today
فقدتك دهرا كنت أفزع فقده
I lost you for an age, bearing the heaviest of burdens in your absence.
طلول لها بالأبرقين دوارس
She had braids shining like lightning
يجد أخو الحرص في سعيه
The greedy one finds in his quest,
أي يوم من صاعد لم أرح فيه
What day ascending have I not seen in it
ولم أر مثل الخمر للهم شافيا
I have not seen wine like sorrow as a healer,
يا ابن يزيد سيد المحاش
O son of Yazid, chief of the tents
ألا قاتل الله بغداد تارا
Alas, may God destroy Baghdad, once bright
أنفت من الضيم الذي لو رئمته
I averted from the oppression which if I despised
ما الفتك إلا لفتى لا بد
No raider except a hero whose mind is set,
ان الوفاء وفاء لا يغيره
Loyalty is loyalty, time cannot change it
جاء الشتاء وما عندي له عدد
Winter came and I have nothing to count for it
تكاد تنبت عيدانا يوافقها
She almost grows branches that the lute's strings would accompany
ضمنت لسعد بالأبارق ردها
I promised Sa'd with lightning response,
أشارت بأطراف لطاف كأنها
With delicate fingers like polished pearls
بمن يستغيث العبد الا بربه
To whom can the servant cry out, except to his Lord?
روت عنك أخبار المعالى محاسنا
News of your virtues told of your beauty
رأى وجه من أهوى عذولي فقال لي
He saw the face of my beloved and said to me
ويوم ترامى بالسهام لحاظه
One day his tent was pierced with arrows,
ترى الهم ليس له فرجة
Does sorrow have no relief?
متى يطلع البدر من أفقه
When does the full moon rise from the horizon
كم تظن الظنون غير مصيب
How much do you think vain thoughts hit not the mark!
مرهفة تعجز وصف اللسان
Delicate, defying description by the tongue
كل شيء سوى القريض يد السالب
All but poetry, the conqueror's hand
بنفسى من الفتيان كل سميدع
With my own self from the youths, every submissive weakling
وقاك الله فاغرة الرجال
May God protect you from the empty boasts of men,
هلا خلوت بعذلي يوم تنصحني
Why did you avoid me on the day you advised me?
ألم أك يا شيبان أول طاعن
Was I not, O gray hair, the first assailant,
أقسم بالقادر في ملكه
I swear by the Almighty in His kingdom,
وأطلس ما في سعيه غير أنه
His efforts avail him naught but want and need remain,
وقفنا على قبر العلاء بن صاعد
We stood at the grave of Ala' bin Sa'eed
وقد كلمت قلبي سيوف لحاظه
The swords spoke to my heart through their sheaths
غنى على العود شاد سهم ناظره
The glance of Shadi singing to the lute
لحا الله حيا لا تزال حرابه
May God keep alive those whose swords are unsheathed
وقفنا في ديار بني عدي
We stood in the abodes of the tribe of Adiyy
لولا الترفع عن قول الهجاء غدت
Were it not for disdaining slanderous speech
فوق سهامك وارم النجم عن عرض
Aim your arrows high and shoot for the stars
لام العذول على هواه وفندا
The blame is not on the one lost in love's passion,
ترى الصبح من بعد الاحبة أسود
The dawn appears black after nightfall
أعد التحية يا خزامى بابل
O Khazami of Babylon, prepare the greetings,
محل الحي مالك لا تبين
The abode of the living, my friend, is not apparent
نصر العواذل والدموع خواذلي
My tears and sorrows are my loyal friends
ألا فتى يمنع الجيران جانبه
Behold a youth whose armory defends his neighbors
ظنناه الخليفة من أبيه
We thought him the successor of his father,
أتأمل أعداءك الخائفين
I gaze upon your frightened enemies
أبلغا عني الوزير الذي لي
Convey on my behalf to the minister who is mine
يا ناطقا كان فصل القول من خطله
O you whose eloquence distinguished right speech from error,
لم يدع الدهر وكر العصرين
Time has left behind nothing of past eras
أأغصان بان ما أرى أم شمائل
Are those branches of a bān tree that I see, or profiles
لا أرهب الدهر اذا تعرما
I do not fear time when it grows harsh
بالبيت ذى الأستار والحجون
In the house with curtains and alcoves,
قل للذي بذ الشيع
Say to the one who spread calumnies,
صبرا على نوب الزمان
Patience with the vicissitudes of time,
إن أسياف الوغى لو نطقت
If the swords of turmoil could speak
بعت أفراحى وودعت الجذل
I sent away my joys and bade farewell to delight,
زعم الركب والاحاديث تنمي
The caravan claimed, and the tales grew,
يا هند يا ذات البرى والخلخال
O Hind, you of anklets and bangles
سلبت محاسنك الغزال صفاته
Your beauty robbed the gazelle of its traits
لله در فتى يلذ
Praise to the valiant youth when called upon
نحن لا نستنيل غيرك في الناس
We seek from none but you though there are some
اذا انجابت اللأواء عنا وعنكم
If the war clouds depart from us and you,
لماذا أنت في الدنيا تخاف
Why do you fear this world, when you have
حللت بأعلى شاهق متمنع
I climbed the highest, inaccessible peak,
حلف المفقع أنني في كفه
The braggart swore I'm in his palm,
اشرب على مطر المصيف
Drink to the rain of summer,
تكدرت المودة والإخاء
Friendship and brotherhood have soured
أيا من بشرق الأرض والغرب يمتري
O you who travels the breadth of east and west
يقول بنو حمدان إنك مملق
The tribe of Hamdan says you are a flatterer,
فابق عاى المقام دانى العطايا
He who stays at the abode, bestowing gifts,
بدا ورنت لواحظه دلالا
Her glance appeared, revealing a sign
تعرى كل أرض من فتاها
Every land is stripped of its youth,
بأبي وأمي كل ذي
By my father and mother,
ألا يا صاح من للمجد صاح
Oh you who calls for glory, who voices
إنما الناس من حذار النزال
People avoid fighting
دفع الله نائبات الليالي
God has relieved you, O bearer of heavy sorrows,
رقت لنا حين هم السفر بالسفر
She softened to us when travel was intended with travel
ما لنا يا ضعيف الوداد
What's wrong with you, O weak in affection?
تركت التلوم للفاتر
I left complaining to the apathetic
كيف العزاء وأين بابه
What solace, where is its door?
ما بال فعلك في الأفهام لم يقم
Your deeds in minds could not establish
حفظ الله صاحبا كان ينبوع
May God preserve a companion who used to cheer me up
وسما ابن حماد ففاز
Ibn Hammad advanced and outshone
يا واليا طالت ولايته
O governor, your rule has been long
كل بعيد قعره غامر
Every far place, its depths are teeming
إذا عرس السارون في بطن زامر
When the caravan camps in the belly of a valley,
وقالوا اجمعوا ريعانها قد أتيتم
ولا مسعد الا مسامرة سخت
يا قلب لا تقدم على
أناشده الرحمن في جمع شملنا
رضينا وما ترضى السيوف القواضب
طلاب المعالي للمنون صديق
في كل يوم لنا يا دهر معركة
تصاحبني البيداء في كل مذهب
وما زالت غواة بني عدي
بأي مهول في الزمان أهال
سواد الدجى طرفي وأنجمه صحبي
قربت للرحلة شوشاة ذلق
ألا من لليلى وهي حالفة الخدر
يا لقوم لفراش يصطلى
يا أم مقتحم العجاج الأقتم
ومستثقل للشام عزمي وربما
على أي شىء يكون الحسد
يا من رأى عارضا يصوب دما
حمى ظهره الأسد الأغلب
ما لمن يسكن القبور صديق
رفعت لك القلل الطوال بعرعر
وفدت فلم أترك مقالا لوافد
ستخفرني مضارب هندواني
تحيد الردينيات يوم الوغى عنا
شددت في صبواتي شدة الشاري
لبسوا القلوب على الدروع حزامة
أخوك من استقل لك الوداد
برح اشتياق وادكار
وأتعب خلق الله من ذاد همه
أسعد بها يا قمري برزة
وكأنه في حجرها ولد لها
أبى الله أن أهوى من الناس واحدا
لحا الله الجزيرة من بلاد
كل ما تبتغيه سهل يسير
أراع بما لا يراع الوليد
نحن بقايا طعن القنا القصد
يا أيها الملك الذي أخلاقه
لعمري لقد أنذرت ساكن قومس
إذا استروح العمر من همه
أيوعد فقع كامن بقراره
لا زال جد الملك الأعظم
قل لحسام الدولتين المحسود
اذا لم تعدل قسمة الزاد بيننا
لا عدمنا من يعدم الأشكالا
بأى سلاح أم بأية عدة
أما رائع ينتابني فيروع
لا جرت عبرة الوزير بن حمد
أقل الله خيرك من زمان
نفارق بغدادا فلا نتأسف
من يردني فانني بذري القص
بكركر من جبال الروم شم
يا دهر هل عاديت فيمن سادا
تنفست محزونا وليس تنفسي
أبت عادة للفتك خوف المخاوف
بنى مقن داووا ضعائن عامر
مواعيدنا يشفى بهن غليل
ألا كل برء بعد رامة مسقمي
يا من أضر بحسن الشمس والقمر
تبسم خلاب فغرك ثغره
بك من معالجة الفراق عيانه
برى الله وهبا يوم صور خلقه
يقول مليك الأرض جسمك ناحل
دع قاطعا بيديه يأخذ خيفة
رأيت الصبر ياصمصام أدنى
أنا لك من أدالك بالتمام
قد تحملت طول هذا التجافي
تذكرت مصلتة كالقضب
يا لحضي دعوة ياله
وأدهم يستمد الليل منه
لك المجد والحسب الأرفع
هذا سروري بأبي المعمر
ألا يا حبذا طيب الغبوق
ثن السر عن كل مستخبر
خلقت مشيعا أهوى الحماما
لام العذار أطالت فيك تسهيدي
خف يا كريم على عرض يدنسه
أيا بانة القاع بين السمر
أنسية في مثال الجن تحسبها
وناعورة قالت وقد حال لونها
أغره بناظر
خليلي ان قالت بثنية ماله
ويح قلبي من كاسر الطرف أضحى
