1. Behold a youth whose armory defends his neighbors
Then, relying on him, the son of Ibn Abbad takes refuge

2. Dead are his hopes while his attainments are severed
And ceased are the habits of his wonted practices

3. Deprived of props it was leaning on
Literature lies shadowed and its pillars pulled out

4. Of his lofty principles nothing survives but sincerity
Of the eggs none survives save the pouches

5. And of wealth nothing survives but every bright minted coin
With which wine is bought or the wayfarer lured

6. Assailing his glory is my saying when I mention it
And what are my praises compared to his merits

7. You invited me while mountains of snow were averse
And rain had decamped from Baghdad's land

8. You were not pleased that I seek your bounty and you grant it
Rather you initiated and the credit redounds to the initiator

9. What a confluence of joyful news and greetings
And delight - no appointment had been made by me

10. Beyond the misfortune of my grandfather is a misfortune
Some mourned me who yesterday were envious

11. I spend the day in bereavement and the night busy from you
So swiftly time accomplishes my perdition

12. May your cheek delight from a beauty that will abandon it
Leaving you with no brother, beyond this day, in the valley

13. You give generously without promising and procrastinating
And chastise only after warning

14. For horses whose flanks the lances pierce
You have veiled some from their goal and purpose

15. For the famished with no sumptuous repast
And the thirsty with no fresh water

16. And for a plea the adversary cannot counter
Save with your guidance and wisdom

17. And meanings over words it subjugates
Until it converses with spirits through bodies

18. Death contents itself with the pride
Of having conquered the best of mortals

19. After you had forbidden and admonished it
It voluntarily submitted, O best of the obedient

20. Time is like a raging lion that consumed us all
Reforming with corruption

21. Perhaps my tears will soften it
But they overwhelmed my supporters and pillars

22. And how can I despair for a thousand lost
When a father is wont to the death of his children

23. The dew is gone and the hearts of the living hardened
And the homeland was emptied of its people

24. And people sensed that generosity is a miracle
So the passing of the vanished comet is not blamed
