Good thoughts in evil plight will naught avail.

2. By day the luckless dreams of fortune's guiles,
By night his hopes are crowned with full success;

3. I won the taste of it in fancy's dream,
But when I woke no taste thereof remained.

4. So Benu Hamdan on the battle morn
And day of treaty show themselves as lions brave,

5. Their wealth they sacrifice, themselves they give
More lavishly than gifts of mine and goods.
