1. Ignorance among Arabs and non-Arabs alike,
Or are they all unjust towards my darkness?

2. They claimed my words were flawless,
Except for brevity of prose and verse.

3. If the heart's longing was expressed concisely,
What harm to convey meaning to the confounded?

4. Brevity that elucidates is better,
Than causing confusion with more words.

5. They cannot equal my speed,
Nor can the pursuer match the star.

6. Hypocrisy has spread, I see no one,
Expressing satisfaction, except resentfully.

7. I have nothing but a sharp sword, a brother,
By God, not born of my mother.

8. It protects but is not protected,
Between the protected and the protector lies much difference.

9. After you I met those who were deaf,
And whoever meets the deaf, should pretend deafness.

10. I praised a people, had I blamed them,
I would have avoided insulting their sheepishness.

11. They were praised but did not find comfort,
And their criticism did not upset them.

12. I endured them with patience,
And suppressed my anger if they were content with suppression.

13. After they wronged and oppressed,
They came to make peace with me over their injustice.

14. My blades remain sheathed,
As intention lies dormant within anxiety.

15. And the Samārid in their abodes,
Seeking dismissal for the silent one’s misdeeds.

16. Now their positions have been realized,
They come after their wounds to make peace with me.

17. If I sought exoneration regarding their aggression,
I would betray it one day when my sickness passes.

18. Or if I particularly supported the tribe of Maṭar,
They repelled injustice with eloquent mouths.

19. Whoever faces them, faces the slanderer
At the watering places, before they arrive to shed his blood.

20. A people who watch over beasts, so they
Do not approach their reserved pastures.

21. They prepare provisions for guests and protect
The hosted from vile certainty.

22. To withhold reproach is the greatest honor,
And greater than it is generosity in scarcity.

23. Both are life’s gifts in the view of
The vivacious, and preference with provision.

24. No generosity remains after what they began with,
Can there be a third for the soul and body?

25. I swear by the house whose stones
They raised, adding one stone upon another.

26. And the rulers of Allah's house forbid him
Except from circumambulation and touching.

27. And the female dancers in their shining clothes
Wipe it with the edges of their sleeves.

28. It was not like Ibn al-Marzuban's nor
Will its equal be found among the non-Arabs.

29. More protective of one who appeals, when his brothers
Abandon him, and more compelled than him towards glory.

30. Increase oh Nufādhār, and which of them
Resembles you in resolve and discretion?

31. A grumbling band that sets out at daybreak
And meets whoever it encounters without crime.

32. Its cubs in the thickets ready to pounce,
Trained to feast on flesh over flesh.

33. Snarling she-wolves who revive his zeal
And kill those they suspect with their fangs.

34. As the fish takes the mirage for a torch
In the horizon, while it remains on land.

35. A people who excel when they dip
Their pens in saliva and poison.

36. Only with their power did he who possessed two horns prevail
When he ascended, upon the mound.

37. They descended into the cities of Wāsiṭ, they
Protect it with the bridge over the marsh.

38. They made the rivers flow submissively,
And satisfied the horses with fodder.

39. So Rome asks after them
And India deliberates and resolves.

40. They dispelled the nights from their misfortunes,
And walked upon the deluge in the depths.

41. They are the sons of the noble, their child
Sings his lineage instead of his name.

42. You are the advocate for their singers,
While ignorance is armored with patience.

43. Three are yours among their houses,
During litigation and the judiciary’s decision.

44. You never ceased to avert harm from my body
Until I dispelled doubt from my mind.

45. I reckoned your shadow upon me an emigrant,
As it were the shadows of robes of generosity.

46. Irrigator of the soil of Isfahan, it
Was endowed with every palm tree laden with fruit.

47. Your utterance supersedes the proverbial,
And your glance supersedes the arrow.
