A thirsty man gathering dew that pours out.

5. If he lands in a place whose air was not clapped by a wing,

There are snakes slithering in their thickets.

8. Alas, I cannot journey towards you,
And the flood plain is between me and you, vast.

9. So tell the rain-pourer of war, before its time,

Bringing death, rending them like a slaughtering knife.

14. They are cut off from their dawns and times of watering
By the morning breezes, attacking and moaning.

Struggling for your causes and fighting.

17. A reward! So refrain from the ignorance of your fool
And he who does not restrain his dog is a barker.

18. I was nothing but absent, preoccupied,

20. Far be it for me that the springs of poetry
Should flow upon you or the meters surge.

21. Perhaps Abu Hassan will dispel its darkness
With his geniusโand the Buyerโsuccess is profitable.

Lofty heights and swords that tear flesh.

25. They maim the dunes and profit is a pleasure
That battles the fires of settlements or hurls spears.
